Petes Faceoff against Blazers in Sledge Hockey Match

Peterborough Petes News Release

(Peterborough, ON, February 28, 2014)- Fans of both the Petes & Blazers are encouraged to visit the Evinrude Centre Monday, March 3rd at 6:15pm to witness Petes players in their first attempt at the game of sledge hockey.

Though the OHLers may be stars at the PMC, they will certainly be challenged when they replace hockey skates for a sledge. They're upper body strength will be tested as they attempt to maneuver the familiar ice surface in a new way, propelling themselves with nothing but two 2 to 4 foot sticks with metal teeth. To add to their obstacles, the Petes will not have any on-ice practice in the sledges before the game begins. The contest shouldn't be too one-sided, however, as the Petes and Blazers will be equally divided amongst two teams.

Both teams are eager to hit the ice. Petes rookie defenseman Cameron Lizotte says, "I'm very excited to be participating in this game versus the Blazers. I've watched a few Olympic sledge hockey games, but this will be my first time actually playing." Other confirmed participants from the Petes include Steven Varga, Anthony Stefano, Mitchell Webb, Eric Cornel, Nick Ritchie, Josh MacDonald, Clark Seymour, and Nelson Armstrong.

"This partnership between the Blazers and the Petes is one of many community initiatives that we are very excited to take part in. Most of our players have been exposed to sledge hockey, through watching the Olympics and the World Championships, so I think they're very excited to actually get into the sledge and participate in a game. From what I've heard, it can be a very challenging sport, so I'm interested to see how some of our players make out."

-Matt D'Agostini, Community Events Coordinator, Peterborough Petes

"It's my dream come true to face off against the Petes!" says Johnny Greenwood who wears the number ten for the Blazers. Anita Flynn, Intermediate Team Manager added, "It's perfect timing as the Paralympics beginning on March 7th." This just-for-fun matchup could be the perfect tension-breaker for the anxious Blazers.
