Kitchener Rangers News Release
Mason Kohn and Curtis Meighan scored for the Kitchener Rangers in a 5-2 loss to the Saginaw Spirit on Friday night.
Saginaw jumped in front early, opening the scoring just 15 seconds into the first period. Blake Clarke forced a turnover deep in Kitchener territory and quickly moved the puck to Jeremiah Addison. The sophomore winger turned and snapped a shot past Rangers starter Matthew Greenfield to pick up his seventh goal of the season.
The lead was short-lived as Kitchener took advantage of a power play opportunity to get on the board less than a minute later. Darby Llewellyn fed the puck to Mason Kohn in front of the Spirit net, and the rookie fired a shot past the paddle of Jake Paterson to record his seventh of the year. Ryan MacInnis also earned a helper on the play.
Jimmy Lodge put the Spirit back in front with a power play marker midway through the first period. The veteran forward picked up a pass from Eric Locke and chipped it high over Greenfield, picking up his 17th of the season. Team scoring leader Kristoff Kontos also assisted on the goal.
Kitchener led shots on goal 16-8 after 20 minutes of play.
Third-year centre Curtis Meighan pulled the Rangers even at 2-2 early in the middle frame, pushing a shot past Paterson's blocker, for his career best 10th of the season. Brandon Robinson and defenceman Logan Schmidt collected points with assists on the goal at 4:18.
Justin Kea restored Saginaw's lead with less than five to play in the second period. The veteran pivot collected a pass in the faceoff circle and lifted a heavy, high shot over the blocker of Greenfield. His 18th of the year was set up by Nick Moutrey.
With 1.5 seconds left before the intermission, Dylan Sadowy deflected a shot past Greenfield to extend the Spirit lead to two goals. The draft-eligible winger's 25th of the season was assisted by Moutrey and Kea, the second point of the night for each.
The Rangers continued to lead shots on goal in the middle frame, by a 14-8 margin.
Kitchener elected to make a goaltending change in the break, sending Jordan DeKort to the crease to open the third period.
Kea scored his second of the game with just over a minute remaining on the clock. The short-handed empty net goal was assisted by Sadowy.
The Rangers out-shot Saginaw 8-6 in the third period, finishing with a 38-22 overall advantage.
