Plymouth Whalers Get a Point in Gritty 2-1 Shootout Loss to Barrie

PLYMOUTH - Zach Hall's shootout goal gave the Barrie Colts a 2-1 victory over the Plymouth Whalers in an Ontario Hockey League game played Friday night at Compuware Arena.

Hall and Andrew Mangiapane scored in the shootout for Barrie, while Yannick Rathgeb replied for the Whalers.

Earlier, Zach Lorentz scored his team-leading 25th goal of the season in second period for Plymouth; Red Wing draft Andreas Athansiou scored his 42nd goal of the season for Barrie in the third period to send the game into overtime.

Barrie outshot Plymouth, 51-36.

Plymouth gained a point over Kitchener in their bid to make the OHL playoffs. The Whalers - in the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference - improve to 24-30-0-7, good for 55 points and eight points ahead of ninth-place Kitchener (22-36-2-1, 47 points). Plymouth and Kitchener both have seven games left.

In addition, the Whalers are five points behind seventh seed Owen Sound (26-26-3-5, 60 points). The Attack gained a point Friday in losing to London, 4-3, in a shootout. Owen Sound has eight games left.

Barrie is now 32-26-1-2, good for 67 points and fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

The Whalers host Windsor on Saturday at 7:05 pm at Compuware Arena (7 pm, 88.1FM WSDP).
