Pesky Grays top Cutters

August 1, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release

The Can-Am Grays, the league's traveling team, played the role of ungracious visitor as they beat the New Haven County Cutters 8-6 on Monday night at Yale Field.

It was a game full of failed opportunities for the Cutters. They left 12 runners on base, while the Grays only stranded four.

The turning point of the game occurred in the sixth inning, when the Cutters trailed 6-4 and had the bases loaded with two outs. Recently crowed Can-Am League Batter of the Week Bill Peavey stepped to the dish with a chance to tie the game or even possibly take the lead. But pitcher Lenny Carter, who came in that inning to replace starter Tony Pierce, induced Peavey to ground out to second baseman B.J. Weed, ending the threat.

Weed was also one of the major contributors at the plate for the Grays. He went 3 for 5 with a pair of RBIs. Charles Peterson hit his first home run of the season in the top of the eighth inning, giving the Grays an insurance run that they would end up needing as the Cutters rallied to put two on the board in the bottom of the frame.

The Cutters registered nine hits, with Chas Terni, Carlos Brackley and Mike LaRosa each tallying a pair.

Game two of the three game series takes place on Tuesday at 7:05. Tim Keinath (1-5) pitches for the Cutters against the Grays' Glen Keeton (0-0).
