New Haven OF Derrick Gibson and North Shore LHP Bryan Morse were named the Slam Baseball Can-Am League batter of the month and pitcher of the month, respectively, for the month of July.

Gibson hit .379 in July, going 36-for-95 with five doubles, five homers and 25 RBIs. He spent the month slugging .589 and reaching base at a .487 clip. He's batting .347 for the season, good for sixth in the league. Gibson's second in the league in on-base percentage (.448) and his slugging percentage of .591 is fourth best. He's hit 10 homers with 41 RBIs and eight stolen bases on the year for the Cutters, who currently have a two-game lead in the South Division.

Currently in his thirteenth season of professional baseball, the thirty-year-old was a 13th-round draft pick of Colorado in the 1993 draft and spent seven seasons in the Rockies organization, leading the South Atlantic League with 32 home runs and 115 RBI for Ashville in 1995; he was also named one of the league's three all-star outfielders, along with Macon' s Andruw Jones and Albany's Vladimir Guerrero. Gibson registered 49 at-bats in the majors in 1998 and 1999, hitting .286 with two home runs and eight RBI. He has also spent time in the Florida, Arizona and Anaheim organizations, as well as the Northern and Atlantic Leagues, leading the Atlantic League with 89 RBI for Long Island in 2003. This is his first season with New Haven County.

Morse is 6-1 for July with a 1.25 ERA. He's allowed just seven earned runs on 31 hits for the month, striking out 27 batters in 50.1 innings. He's pitched four complete games, including three shutouts for the Spirit. Morse pitched a complete game shutout of Elmira on July 31, holding the Pioneers to just four hits and one walk while striking out seven in the Spirit's 7-0 win. He was also named pitcher of the week for the week of July 25-31.

Morse, 27, was drafted by the Florida Marlins out of Mount Olive (NC) College in 1999. In 14 starts for Utica of the NY-Penn league in 1999, Morse went 3-5 with a 3.45 ERA. He appeared as a reliever for Kane County of the Midwest League in 2000 and for Brevard County of the Florida State League in 2001. In 2002, he went back to starting for the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs of the Northeast League, sporting a 7-5 record with a 1.99 ERA. He joined North Shore in 2003, where opponents hit only .256 against him, and led the Spirit with a 10-4 record and a 2.50 ERA in 2004. This season, Morse is 9-2 with a 2.49 ERA. He leads the Can-Am League in wins, ERA, complete games, shutouts and innings pitched.
