August 1, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
SportsTicker, the Can-Am League's official statistician, has named New Haven INF Bill Peavey and North Shore LHP Bryan Morse its batter and pitcher of the week, respectively, for the week of July 25-31.
Peavey spent the week hitting at a .462 clip, going 12-for-26 with two doubles, three homers and six RBIs. He slugged .885 and had an on-base percentage of .563 during that span. The Cutters went 5-2 for the week, including an 11-4 win over Quebec on July 31. In that game, Peavey led the Cutters with a 2-for-4 night featuring his twelfth home run and second in two games. Peavey drove in two and scored once on the night.
Peavey, 26, played for the University of Southern California before the Cleveland Indians drafted him in 2002. He hit .279 with six homers and 41 RBIs playing first base and DH for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the NY-Penn League in 2002. In 2003, Peavey split the season between Kinston of the Carolina League and Lake County of the South Atlantic League. In 2004, Peavey notched eleven homers and 35 RBIs in 65 games for Lake County. This is his first season in the Can-Am League, where he's hitting .326 with 12 homers and 48 RBIs on the year.
In two outings this week, Morse went 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in 17 innings of work. He allowed only three earned runs on ten hits and three walks, striking out twelve. Morse pitched a complete game shutout of Elmira on July 31, holding the Pioneers to just four hits and one walk while striking out seven in the Spirit's 7-0 win.
Morse, 27, was drafted by the Florida Marlins out of Mount Olive (NC) College in 1999. In 14 starts for Utica of the NY-Penn league in 1999, Morse went 3-5 with a 3.45 ERA. He appeared as a reliever for Kane County of the Midwest League in 2000 and for Brevard County of the Florida State League in 2001. In 2002, he went back to starting for the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs of the Northeast League, sporting a 7-5 record with a 1.99 ERA. He joined North Shore in 2003, where opponents hit only .256 against him, and led the Spirit with a 10-4 record and a 2.50 ERA in 2004. This season, Morse is 9-2 with a 2.49 ERA. He leads the Can-Am League in wins, ERA, complete games, shutouts and innings pitched.
