First Place Cutters Sweep Can-Am Awards
August 1, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
New Haven County's slugging duo of outfielder Derrick Gibson and first baseman Bill Peavey, who have played major roles in the Cutters taking a two-game lead in the South Division, hauled in major awards from the Can-Am League Monday.
Gibson, the onetime Colorado Rockies player, was selected as the league's Slam Baseball Batter of the Month in an announcement from the league office in Durham, NC a couple of hours after Peavey was selected as Batter of the Week.
Gibson hit .379 and drove in 25 runs in July, while recording a .589 slugging percentage and reaching base at a .478 pace. He went 36-for-95 with five doubles and five home runs. He ranks sixth in the league for the season with a .347 batting average, is second in on-base percentage (.448) and fourth in slugging (.591). The 13-year professional has 10 homers, 41 RBI and eight stolen bases in only 47 games.
For the third consecutive week, a Cutters player earned one of the two Can-Am awards. Peavey took the batting honors for the week of July 25-31. He continues this streak of weekly dominance started by pitcher Jarrett Stawarz before the All-Star break and followed up by Gibson last week.
Pitchers were hard pressed to keep the former USC standout and Cleveland farmhand off the bases this past week. He hit .462 (12-for-26) with two doubles and three home runs and reached safely more than half the times he got up to hit (.565 on base percentage). His six RBIs over the last seven games give him 48 for the season, fourth in the league and most in the two-year history of the Cutters. New Haven County went 5-2 for the week
The Batter of the Week award caps off an impressive month for the lefty slugger. In July, Peavey posted a batting average of .388 (38-for-98), hit five home runs and drove in 20 runs. He is hitting .326 for the year.
The Cutters host the Can-Am Grays Monday and Tuesday nights at 7:05 and Wednesday morning at 11:05 at Yale Field. Tickets for the games are available online at www.CuttersBaseball.com, over the phone at 203-777-5636 or by visiting the Yale Field box office.
