Can-Am league recap
August 1, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
QUEBEC 6, NEW JERSEY 4 @ Little Falls, N.J. Time: 2:41 ATT: 1,466 W: Marty Janzen (5-1) L: Joe Orloski (4-4) S: Carlos Mendoza (16) HR: None Going into today's game, Quebec found itself in an unfamiliar place - a losing streak. But after today's game, including a solid display of team offense and effective pitching, Les Capitales is headed in the right direction, halting their skid at two games with a 6-4 win over New Jersey. Helping Quebec along the way was CF Goef Tomlinson, who hit 2-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI. For the Jackals, leadoff man Zach Smithlin made a push to put himself back atop the League batting race, hitting 2-2 on the night, trying to push his team to victory with a double, two runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases. But the Jackals couldn't come up with enough to answer the Quebec offense, which scored five quick runs in the fourth and fifth innings, taking a commanding 6-1 lead by the sixth that New Jersey could only chip away at but not topple. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTH SHORE 15, WORCESTER 4 @ Worcester, Mass. Time: 2:52 ATT: 3,231 W: John Kelly (8-4) L: Derell McCall (3-4) S: None HR: NSR - Vic Davilla 2 (15,16) WOR - Omar Pena (11), Andy Brown (14), Zach Strong (3) North Shore maintained its torrid ascent towards the top of the North Division tonight, picking up win number five in a row in impressive fashion, pounding the Tornadoes for 19 hits and 15 runs scored. 1B Vic Davilla accounted for a quarter of the hits and almost half of the runs by himself, abusing the opposing pitching with 5-6 hitting, including two mammoth home runs, three runs scored, and a mind-boggling seven RBI in the game. More impressive than the final stat line were his two big homers: his first bomb of the game, a grand slam that appeared to break the sound barrier as it traveled over the wall in dead center field, while his second home run, a three-run jack, left a sizeable crater where it landed in the left field grass. His totals lift him to second and third in the league in home runs and RBI, respectively, while the win lifts his team to it's fifth straight. The Tornadoes needed help from the outset, as they gave up three runs in the first, and simply couldn't plug the holes faster than they appeared, falling behind 4-3 in the third, which grew to 10-3 by the fifth, and ballooned to the final of 15-4 by the eighth. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- GRAYS 8, NEW HAVEN 6 @ West Haven, Conn. Time: 3:21 ATT: 1,021 W: Tony Pierce (2-2) L: Brad Whitworth (3-2) S: Mike Weckenham (1) HR: GRAYS - Charles Peterson (1) The Grays' recipe for success called for consistent run output, and respectable pitching, they added a few dashes of luck to season to taste, and walked away victorious, 8-6 over Division-leading New Haven. The Grays had four players add at least two hits, three players score two runs each, and pitching that craftily scattered hits and walks, while deftly dispatching scoring opportunities as they arose, amounting to an astonishing twelve stranded base runners for the Cutters. New Haven kept pace with the Grays through most of the game, tying the game at 2-2 in the third, cutting the Grays lead to 6-4 in the sixth, even pulling to 7-6 in the eighth inning, but each time they got a chance it slipped away in the form of a harmless grounder to the 1B or 2B, including three opportunities with two runners on, and one shot with the bases loaded. Ironically, the one time they failed to get anything started was the ninth, as P Mike Weckenham pitched a perfect ninth for his first save of the season. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ BROCKTON 9, ELMIRA 3 @ Lynn, Mass. Time: 2:49 ATT: 3,049 W: Dennis Boyd (3-3) L: Greg Keagle (4-6) S: None HR: ELM - Ransel Melgarejo (1) BRO - Gerald Eddie (1), Craig Lewis (8) The Bad News Bears made their triumphant return to the field tonight, and this was no cheesy remake of a timeless film classic. No, David Pollock and Greg Cavagnaro took up their familiar positions as the starting battery, this time for the Brockton Rox, reprising their roles as Rudi Stein and Engleberg, respectively. For the two former Bears, the outcome was the same, Pollock finished with zero innings pitched and an earned run, while Cavagnaro wsa pulled before he could register an at-bat. Playing the role of Amanda Whurlitzer tonight was P Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd, who came on in relief of Pollock, and worked seven full innings of vintage "Can", striking out nine and allowing just two earned runs in the win. On offense, the Rox got a big boost from Craig "Kelly Leak" Lewis who, finishing 3-5 with three runs scored, a home run and two RBI, brings his average to .300, just a hair shy of Leak's claimed average of .841. For the Pioneers, the hoopla surrounding the game clearly fed their appetites, putting up all of their three runs in the first two innings, before cooling off as the "Can" fanned the Elmira batters left and right.
