Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins unified for a dominant victory over the Binghamton Senators, putting forth an all-around team effort at both ends of the ice for a 5-0 win at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on Wednesday night.

The Penguins (39-21-4-1) saw multi-point performances from five players, but perhaps what was most impressive was the way the team battled from the drop of the first puck to the sound of the final buzzer to preserve Tristan Jarry's team-leading fifth shutout of the season.

"That was the urgency and desperation that these guys want to play with," said Wilkes-Barre/Scranton head coach Clark Donatelli. "They really wanted to get Jarry the shutout. He made some big saves when he had to, and it means a lot to them. It means a lot to the team, and they take pride in that."

The shutout was Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's 10th as a team, the most of any squad in the AHL.

The Penguins started the game on the right foot, raining shots on Chris Driedger standing in the crease for Binghamton. All of that pressure culminated in the game's first goal, coming from Carter Rowney at 3:32 of the first period. With the goal, Rowney extended his career-high point streak to eight games.

After dictating the pace of play for the majority of the first frame, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton carried a 12-4 advantage in shots, but just a one-goal lead.

The lead was quickly expanded however, as the Penguins began converting on their changes in an explosive, three-goal second period.

Dominik Simon tucked in a power play goal at 7:19 of the second, putting his team up, 2-0.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took a 3-0 lead when Jean-Sébastien Dea wired a one-timing pass from Harrison Ruopp past Driedger at 13:51 of the middle frame. Ruopp's assist was his first career AHL point.

"And what a point it was, huh?" said Donatelli of Ruopp. "It was a great pass by him. He battles hard, he got in a fight, I thought it was a great game for him."

The three-goal outburst was capped off by Josh Archibald swatting a soaring puck into the top of the cage 1:50 after Dea's goal for the Penguins to carry a 4-0 lead into the second intermission.

Simon scored his second of the game, once again on the man advantage, sticking the 5-0 dagger to Binghamton just 1:06 into the third period.

By the end of the contest, the five Penguins skaters with more than one point were Simon (2G), Dea (1G-1A), Tim Erixon (2A), Tom Kostopoulos (2A), and Tom Sestito (2A).

Jarry finished the game with 20 saves, whereas Driedger stoned the Penguins on 31 of their 36 shots on goal.

The Penguins went two-for-four on the power play and were a perfect two-for-two on the penalty kill.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's next opponent is once again the Binghamton Senators, except next time, they'll face-off at Floyd L. Maines Veterans' Memorial Arena on Friday, Mar. 25. Puck drop between the Pens and Sens is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
