Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins used a late surge in the third period to power past the Hershey Bears, 3-1, in their home opener at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. For the second straight game, Chris Conner notched the game-winner, while Brian Gibbons recorded a goal and assist.
After a scoreless opening frame, Hershey got on the board first when Tomas Kundratek scored off of a wrist shot from the far circle only 4:05 into the second period. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton answered back with a marker of its own just minutes later while shorthanded. Skating into the slot, Gibbons dropped a pass for Jayson Megna, who quickly returned to the puck to his linemate for a the quick shot past Hershey goalie David Leggio to knot the score, 1-1.
After notching the deciding tally last weekend against Bridgeport, Conner was the hero once again thanks to the effort of Gibbons. Intercepting a pass at his own blueline, Gibbons raced in on a breakaway before leaving the puck on the doorstep for Conner to backhand to the top of the net, giving the Pens their first lead of the game.
Zach Sill gave Wilkes-Barre/Scranton some breathing room 1:25 later as Dominic Uher found him in front for a one-timer inside the near post. Penguins goaltender Jeff Deslauriers turned aside 18-of-19 to raise his record to 2-0-0 on the season.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton closes out the weekend on Sunday, Oct. 13, battling the Syracuse Crunch at 5:00 PM at the Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter.
