Lewiston, ME -- The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates 5-2 Saturday evening at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine. Providence got goals from Seth Griffith, Alexander Fallstrom, Craig Cunningham and two goals from Ryan Spooner. Niklas Svedberg made 30 saves to get the victory.
The Pirates opened the scoring on the power play in the first period at the 17:58 mark. Jordan Szwarz deflected the shot from Brandon Gormley for the opening goal of the game, his first goal of the season. Andy Miele recorded the second assist as the Pirates took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The P-Bruins tied the game at one at the 5:16 mark of the second period. Griffith, in his first professional game, scored his first professional goal as he was sent in on a breakaway by Zach Trotman, as he beat Pirates net minder Mike Lee high on the blocker side. A little over 2 minutes later the Bruins would take the lead as Fallstrom slotted home his first goal of the season. The goal came at the 8:08 mark and was unassisted. Providence made it a two goal advantage at the 12:43 mark. Spooner scored on a breakaway after he stole the puck from a Pirates' defender. Just over a minute later at the 13:50 mark, Portland cut the lead to a goal. Jordan Martinook beat Svedberg glove side with a wrist shot. Gormley and Daine Todd picked up the assists. Craig Cunningham capped off the scoring during the five goal second period at the 15:55 mark, as he stuffed the puck home on the power play. Ben Youds and Spooner grabbed the assists as Providence led 4-2 going into the second intermission.
Providence controlled the game in the third period, playing smart defensive hockey with the clock on its side. Spooner sealed the deal with his second goal of the game as he put the puck into the empty net at the 18:48 mark of the 3rd period, an unassisted goal. The P-Bruins went onto the 5-2 victory.
Svedberg stopped 30 of 32 shots for the P-Bruins, while Lee made 23 saves for the Pirates. Providence was 1-for-4 on the power play, and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The P-Bruins return to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday, October 18 at 7:05pm against the Springfield Falcons. The first 2,000 fans will receive a free t-shirt courtesy of Wood & Wire Fence Company. For tickets to this game or any other P-Bruins home games visit www.providencebruins.com .
