St. John's IceCaps News Release
Defenceman T.J. Brennan, coming off AHL Player-of-the-Week honours, fired a hat trick as the Toronto Marlies doubled the St. John's IceCaps 6-3 Saturday afternoon at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto.
Brennan, who also had a three-goal game last week, opened the scoring just 1:44 into the contest and then added another about a minute later to stake the Marlies to an early 2-0 lead. Brennan went to the net virtually unmolested on both tallies, the first coming with a man advantage.
Andrew Gordon gave the IceCaps some life at the 6:11 mark of the first when his shot from the right sideboards found the back of the net for his second of the season. JC Lipon was awarded the only assist.
A little over two minutes later, with the IceCaps on a five-on-three powerplay, Will O'Neill fired a wrist shot top shelf to draw the IceCaps even. Kael Mouillierat and Brenden Kitchton picked up the assists on O'Neill's first marker of the year.
The IceCaps took a 3-2 lead in the first period, when Jerome Samson scored his second of the campaign on a laser from the right face-off circle at 13:49. Jason Jaffray and Adam Lowry had the assists on Samson's powerplay marker.
With 4:22 left in second period, John Michael Liles's powerplay deflection lifted the Marlies back into a tie and about a minute later Toronto regained the lead. The Marlies' sustained pressure paid off on Wade McLeod's goal from the left of IceCaps keeper Jussi Olkinuora, who made 27 saves on the afternoon.
Stefan Legein gave the Marlies an insurance goal at 12:06 of the third period before Brennan completed his hat trick into an empty net at 18:18.
The IceCaps return home to play the Hershey Bears Friday evening (7:30 PM NT). Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at stjohnsicecaps.com and 930AM This Is Newfoundland Labrador, or watch on Rogers TV and AHL Live.
