Penguins reassign Sgroi to Wheeling

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The American Hockey League's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins today reassigned left wing Mike Sgroi to their ECHL affiliate, the Wheeling Nailers.

Sgroi, 26, has appeared in 39 games with the Penguins this season, recording two points (1+1) and 122 penalty minutes. He was originally signed by the Penguins to a 25-game PTO contract on October 30, before signing a two-way contract (AHL-ECHL) for the remainder of the season on January 4.

The 6'5", 235-pound native of Toronto, Ontario started the 2004-05 season with the Nailers, collecting one assist and five penalty minutes.

He spent the majority of last season with the AHL's Utah Grizzlies. In 45 games with the Grizzlies, he recorded six points (2+4) and 152 penalty minutes. Sgroi also appeared in 12 games with the Idaho Steelheads, the Grizzlies' ECHL affiliate, recording one goal and 32 penalty minutes. He was assigned to the Steelheads on March 12. At the time of his assignment, he led Utah in penalty minutes.

During his five-year pro career, Sgroi has appeared in 112 ECHL games with Wheeling, Toledo, New Orleans, Greensboro, Lexington and Idaho, recording 43 points (21+22) and 426 penalty minutes. In 114 career AHL games with Utah, Chicago and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, he has recorded nine points (4+5) and 333 penalty minutes.

The Penguins will look to end their three-game winless streak (0-2-1-0) tomorrow night when they visit the Albany River Rats at 7 p.m. at the Pepsi Arena.
