December 21, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA -Brendan Mikkelson's third goal of the season was also his third game-winner of the year as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins edged the Syracuse Crunch, 2-1, at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Zack Torquato could not have asked for a better start in his Wilkes-Barre/Scranton debut. With the Penguins on the power play, he blasted a slapshot from the left circle past Crunch goalie Cedrick Desjardins for a 1-0 lead at 9:50 of the first.
That score held until the opening minutes of the third as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton hopped back on the power play. Paul Thompson set up a screen in front of the Syracuse crease and Mikkelson floated a wrist shot from the left point that found its way to the back of the net.
Evan Rankin spoiled Jeff Deslauriers' shutout bid with 1:43 left in regulation when he stuff home his own rebound to cut the Penguins' lead in half.
Deslauriers finished the contest with 25 saves for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to raise his record to 12-6-2. Desjardins turned aside 19-of-21 for the Crunch.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins conclude their six-game home stand versus the Norfolk Admirals on Friday, Dec. 27 at 7:05 p.m. Catch all the action on Sports Hub 102 or AHL Live.
