Penalty Kill Trips Up The Chiefs Again As Spokane Falls To Swift Current, 3-1
February 4, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs were tripped up by the penalty kill tonight as they hosted Swift Current for a rare matchup against the Broncos. Eight different Chiefs players saw time in the penalty box for a total of 20 PIM, and the Broncos wasted no time making them pay.
Connor Hvidston scored his 12th of the season for Swift Current with helpers from Josh Filmon and Sam McGinley on the power play at 5:44 of the first. Ty Coupland followed that up with a fierce slapshot from the left slot for his first career WHL goal on another power play at 12:28 of the first with assists from Owen Pickering and Braeden Lewis. Swift's third goal came from Brady Birnie who notched his 11th of the season with an assist from Matthew Ward.
Spokane showed fight late in the third with a power play goal from rookie center Tommy De Luca.
A well worked play along the boards between Cheveldayoff and Catton resulted in a blast from Tommy on the left side for his 14th goal of the season. De Luca is up to 37 points on the season with Catton sitting at 34. Strong showing so far from the two young guys who sit at 5th and 6th respectively among WHL rookies in points this season.
A balanced effort from the Broncos with three different goal scorers and five different assisters was enough to hold off a late push from the Chiefs. Despite letting three goals cross the line, it was another impressive display from Cooper Michaluk in net, who stopped 29 shots and kept the Chiefs hopes alive throughout the game with several sprawling stops.
