Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Each year the Myrtle Beach Pelicans raise funds for local youth sports through their foundation, the Youth Diamond Fund. On Wednesday, August 29, at BB&T Coastal Field, the Youth Diamond Fund will recognize the Grand Strand Miracle League during a special presentation prior to the Pelicans taking the field against the Frederick Keys at 7:05 p.m. A check for $9,000 will be presented to the Miracle League during the ceremony. As part of the presentation, 12 youngsters from the Miracle League will take the field with the Pelicans when the starting line-ups are announced.
"The Pelicans are extremely pleased to award the Miracle League this grant from our Youth Diamond Fund," said Pelicans General Manager North Johnson. "We are happy to present one of the larger donations we've made in recent years due to the success of our golf tournament. These proceeds from the tournament were earmarked for a very deserving group in the Grand Strand area to provide sports activities and opportunities for our young people. Personally, I am thrilled to be associated with the Miracle League in this manner, as I've had the opportunity to watch games at their facility and I know that this money will be going towards a great cause."
"The Youth Diamond Fund is pleased to provide this year's grant to the Miracle League, as they truly help in making a unique difference in our area," said Youth Diamond Fund Chairman Eric Long.
The Grand Strand Miracle League is a one-of-a-kind baseball league for mentally and physically handicapped children. Games are played on a specially designed field that is ideal for wheelchairs and other walking assistance devices. The rules for the league are simple: Everyone plays. Everyone gets a hit. Everyone crosses home plate. Everyone wins.
"The Grand Strand Miracle League is supported solely from donations and grants from businesses and individuals in Myrtle Beach. The gift from the Youth Diamond Fund will be used to maintain and improve our field to keep the Miracle League going and growing," said Tory Mackey, Executive Director of the Grand Strand Miracle League. "We are thrilled to have the support of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, as we strive to bring the great game of baseball to these very special members of our community."
Tonight the Pelicans begin their final home stand of the season, a week-long affair, featuring four games with the Frederick Keys and three with the Kinston Indians. The Pelicans will start Dustin Evans (2-9, 4.55 ERA) in the series opener against the Keys at 7:05 p.m., and the game broadcast begins at 6:45 p.m. with the RSC Equipment Rental pre-game show on ESPN Radio the Team (93.7 FM, 93.9 FM, and 1050 AM) and online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
