Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Frederick scored five runs in the top of the second and used that momentum to hold off a pesky Myrtle Beach squad, edging the Pelicans 8-6 at BB&T Coastal Field Tuesday night. The Keys improved to 28-34 in the second half and 60-71 overall, while Myrtle Beach lost its season-high seventh straight game to fall to 28-36 and 58-75. The Pelicans are still mathematically alive in the Southern Division wild card hunt, but would need to win their final six games while having Salem lose its final six games just to tie the Avalanche for second place.
A double and two passed balls got Frederick on the board in the top of the first, but Myrtle Beach wasted little time in knotting the game at 1-1 as Jordan Schafer led off the bottom of the inning with a triple and scored on Michael Fisher's RBI groundout. The tide turned in the second however, as Brent Krause put Frederick back on top with a one-out RBI single. Brian Bock followed with a run-scoring double, and Blake Davis provided the big blow with a three-run homer to right to make it 6-1. Mark Fleisher's RBI double in the third pushed the margin to 7-1, but the Pelicans slowly but surely made a game of it by chipping away at their deficit methodically.
Fisher collected his second RBI of the game with a single in the third to score Jerry Verastegui, and after J.D. Roberts opened the bottom of the fourth with a single he came around to score on Verastegui's sac fly to cut the margin to 7-3. The Pelicans then struck for three runs in the seventh, as Fisher golfed a two-run homer to right off Keys reliever Josh Potter and Willie Cabrera followed with a solo bomb of his own down the right field line to bring the Birds back to within a single run at 7-6. That was as close as Myrtle Beach would get though, as Frederick tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Krause scored on a double play ball, and the Pelicans didn't manage a hit over the final two innings.
Potter (2-3) earned the win in relief for Frederick despite being touched for four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings of work. Dustin Evans (2-10) started and took the loss for the Pelicans, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits in 4.2 innings. Tag Horner recorded the final eight outs in hitless fashion for his first save. Schafer and Fisher sparked the offense from the top two spots in the order, as Schafer went 3-5 with a triple, two runs scored and two stolen bases, and Fisher finished 2-5 with his first Carolina League home run and four RBI. Roberts also had two hits.
Game two in this four-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, with Pelicans lefty Carlos Sencion (2-1, 2.41 ERA) taking on Frederick's Jason Berken (8-9, 4.73 ERA). The game broadcast begins at 6:45 p.m. with the RSC Equipment Rental pre-game show on ESPN Radio the Team (93.7 FM, 93.9 FM, and 1050 AM) and online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com. Prior to the start of the game, the Pelicans' Youth Diamond Fund, will recognize the Grand Strand Miracle League with a big check presentation. Following the game, kids run the bases courtesy of The Batter's Box. The rest of the final home stand will be highlighted by the final Thirsty Thursday of the year presented by Budweiser, The Weekly Surge, Club Boca, and Hot 100 FM on Thursday, August 30. NASCAR night is scheduled for Saturday, September 1st at 7:05 p.m. and the final post-game fireworks show of the season will be on Sunday, September 2nd as part of Fan Appreciation Night at 6:05 p.m. On Monday, September 3rd the Pelicans close out the season with their final home game of the year at 7:05 p.m.
