WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem bounced back from an early two-run deficit in a 4-2 win over Kinston on Tuesday night at Ernie Shore Field. Warthogs starting pitcher Brian Omogrosso escaped a few jams early in the game to work six innings and limit the Indians to two runs (one earned) on four hits to earn the win. Omogrosso also struck out six as he evened his record at 8-8 for the season. After a leadoff double in the fourth inning, the Warthogs hurlers combined to hold Kinston hitless the rest of the way as Jon Link recorded the final out for his third save as a Warthog.
Kinston scored a pair of runs in the third inning when Jose Constanza walked with one out and stole second base. Josh Rodriguez followed with an RBI single to plate Constanza. A passed ball advanced Rodriguez to second base where he would score from when Warthogs second baseman Robbie Hudson misplayed a ground ball by Johnny Drennen.
A two-out single by Robert Valido in the bottom of the third innings scored Hudson and cut the Kinston lead in half. The Warthogs would take the lead in the fourth inning when Micah Schnurstein walked and Stefan Gartrell blasted a two-run homerun over the left field wall to put Winston-Salem in front 3-2. The Warthogs added a run in the fifth inning when Tyler Reves tripled to start the inning and scored on an RBI groundout by Paulo Orlando.
Erik Stiller (3-6) got the start for Kinston and collected season highs with 5 1/3 innings pitched and seven strikeouts, but also allowed four runs on eight hits to take the loss.
The second game of this four-game series between Winston-Salem and Kinston will unfold on Wednesday, August 29 at Ernie Shore Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 PM with the Warthogs sending RHP Garry Bakker (2-5, 4.04) to the mound. The Indians will counter with RHP Steven Wright (1-2, 8.76).
