Early Homer Dooms Avs

August 28, 2007 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

Wilmington, DE-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, saw Brad McCann pound a three-run home run in the first inning Tuesday night for the Wilmington Blue Rocks at Frawley Stadium. Salem (34-30) never made the deficit up and fell 5-2 in the first of four against Wilmington (42-21).

Two of the first three batters of the game for Wilmington reached as both Jose Duarte and Mario Lisson singled against Salem starter Sean Walker. Then McCann, the former Marlin farmhand, socked a 3-1 pitch over the wall for a three-run homer. It was his sixth homer of the season.

In the fifth, the lead swelled for the Blue Rocks. With two out, Marc Maddox and Mario Lisson were both in scoring position when Brian Mc Fall placed a double down the left-field line to score both runs.

Wilmington starter Dan Cortes took the game to the eighth without allowing a run to the Avalanche. He surrendered just a pair of hits and five base runners overall. In the eighth inning, Salem attacked reliever Tyler Chamnbliss. After he hit Eric King, Chambliss saw Wladimir Sutil sacrifice the runner over. Next, Billy Hart doubled to bring King home and Mitch Einertson scored Hart with a ground ball off of Chambliss's glove.

That was the final run of the game, though, as Salem could not get Ryan Reed home after a leadoff walk in the ninth. Patrick Green earned the save.

Salem, however, stayed two games behind the Kinston Indians for first place in the Southern Division as the K-Tribe lost in Winston-Salem. Salem's magic number for a playoff spot still stands at two pending the Myrtle Beach final against Frederick.

The Avs play game two of the series in Wilmington Wednesday night at 7:05 as Casey Hudspeth throws against lefty Rowdy Hardy.
