Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
In their first game ever in Fredericksburg, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans defeated the Fredericksburg Nationals 11-6 in Tuesday's series opener. The win puts the Birds at 52-38 and 13-12 in the second half while the Nationals dropped to 40-47 and 10-14 in the second half.
Every hitter in the Pelicans' lineup tallied at least one hit as 14 base hits turned into 11 runs. Pedro Ramirez (1-5, HR, 3 RBI) provided the only home run of the game with a three-run shot in the third. Rafael Morel (3-6) led the Birds' lineup with three hits, all singles with a run scored. Parker Chavers (2-4, 2 RBI, BB) and Cristian Hernandez (1-4, 3B, 2 RBI, BB) each brought home a pair of runs in the double-digit eruption.
Starter Nick Hull (6-2) earned the win as he allowed four earned runs across his five innings with five hits and two walks allowed while striking out five. Kenyi Perez allowed a run while pitching 2/3 of an inning and Yovanny Cabrera sacrificed one more in just over two innings of work.
Every member of the Nationals order reached base with Roismar Quintana (2-3, BB) and Wilmer Perez (2-3) each posting multi-hit performances. Leandro Emiliani (1-5, 2B, RBI) provided the only extra-base hit of the game with a double and an RBI.
After not making it through the first inning, Nationals' starter Jarlin Susana (1-6) took the loss by allowing three runs off three hits and two walks in the opening frame. Mason Denaburg followed with three more runs allowed off the home run. Seven of the 11 runs were earned as the Nationals committed three errors in the field.
Three runs in the top of the first gave the Pelicans the lead first. With the bases loaded, Andy Garriola grounded an RBI single to left to open the scoring. Chavers followed with an RBI walk to keep the bases loaded and Hernandez brought the third run in on a groundout back to the pitcher as the Pelicans led 3-0 after the first.
The Pelicans added three more in the top of the third. With one out and two runners on, Ramirez lifted his fourth home run of the season to right-center field to bring everyone in and extend the Birds' lead to 6-0.
Fredericksburg responded with a three-run bottom half. With a runner on and one out, Johnathon Thomas grounded a single up the middle to bring in the run and put the Nationals on the board. After Thomas stole second and moved to third on a groundout, Emiliani hit a double to center to score Thomas for the second run. Sammy Infante followed with an RBI single to left but was thrown out at second by Garriola to end the inning.
Both teams scored in the fourth as the Pelicans had Jefferson Rojas hit a one-out triple and later score on a single to center by Chavers to extend the lead to 7-3.
In the bottom half, Fredericksburg put runners on the corners with one out. A wild pitch by Hull brought home the run from third to cut the deficit down to three.
The Pelicans grabbed three runs back in their half of the sixth. With Garriola on second, Chavers hit a fly ball that was dropped in left by Quintana as Garriola scored and Chavers got to second. Hernandez followed with a line drive to single that got behind Thomas in center after his diving effort. After Chavers scored, Hernandez came home after a throwing error that put the Birds in double digits with a 10-4 lead.
The back-and-forth scoring continued as the Nationals scored one in the bottom half. With runners on second and third, Christopher De La Cruz hit a groundout to first that scored a run.
Myrtle Beach got that run back in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Rojas grounded into a double play as David Avitia scored for the 11th Pelicans' run.
Fredericksburg scored one in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit back to five. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Cortland Lawson grounded into a double play to score a run as the score shifted to 11-6 Myrtle Beach.
The series continues on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
