Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC- In what is becoming akin to a root canal without Novocain, the Pelicans experienced yet another painful loss to the Salem Red Sox on Monday night, allowing double-digit runs in a 10-6 loss to their Southern Division rival.

Paul Clemens took the hill to make his second start of the season after being inserted into the rotation for the injured Arodys Vizcaino, but Clemens's second start didn't go as smoothly as his first as the righty allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits in 3 2/3 innings.

The Red Sox once again got on the board in the top of the second inning as the first four men reached against Clemens. A walk and a single put the first two men on for Will Middlebrooks who hit a tapper towards the third base bag which Sammy Sime let roll. With yet another stroke of good luck for the Sox, the ball stayed fair and clanked off the third base bag for an infield RBI single. With Tim Federowicz at the plate, the designated hitter popped a foul towards the Pelicans dugout, but some miscommunication between Clemens and first baseman Osman Marval led to a dropped pop up to give Federowicz new life.

After reaching on a walk, another runner scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 Salem. With two strikes, men at first and second, and Mitch Dening at the plate, a wild pitch got away from catcher Chris Anderson. Anderson was unable to locate the baseball as the runner at second came around to score. When the throw bounced away from Clemens trying to cover the plate, Federowicz came all the way around from first to score the Sox's fourth run.

Another unearned run came across in the fourth when Sime's throw scooted away from Marval and the rout was on. In the seventh inning of a 6-2 game, Middlebrooks concluded a career day with a grand slam to center field to make it a 10-2 score.

The Birds plated two in the bottom half of the frame on a bases loaded walk and an RBI groundout, but it wasn't enough on this night as the Pelicans dropped their 12th decision in 13 tries to their Southern Division foe.

The 9-1-2 batters in the Pelicans lineup tonight (Cole Miles, Mycal Jones, and Cory Harrilchak) went a combined 5-for-8 with five runs scored, five walks, and three runs batted in, but the 3-through-8 hitters were just 4-for-25 with three of those hits coming off the bat of Luis Sumoza.

These two teams will be back once again for the finale of this four-game set on Tuesday night with first pitch set for 7:05 ET.

For the final game of this series with Salem, it will mark the return of one of the more popular promotions for the Pelicans this season as Team Tuesday comes back to the ballpark. The first 1,000 fans through the gates for Tuesday's 7:05 start will receive a collectible poster of a Pelicans player presented by emediagroup coastal.
