Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
The Hillcats out-hit the Dash for the second straight game, but fell in the series finale 5-3. Winston-Salem finished out the sweep and has beaten the Cats all nine games they've played so far this season.
Lynchburg stranded 15 runners in the game, 36 in the series and went 6-for-42 (.143) with runners on base during the third series of the season against the Dash.
Unlike the first two games of the series, Winston-Salem struck first. Drew Garcia hit a bases-loaded, two-run single to put the Dash on top 2-0.
Winston scored two more in the sixth. Seth Loman and Ozzie Lewis led off the inning with back-to-back doubles. The two advanced a base on an intentional walk, and then scored on the fielding error by Shane Carlson. Both runs were unearned to starter James Avery, but Avery was pulled before Nick Christiani ended the frame.
The first two batters reached on hits in the seventh inning against Christiani. Brandon Short hit a single, and Eduardo Escobar bunted aboard. Jon Gilmore hit into a fielder's choice that retired Escobar.
With runners at first and third, Loman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The next batter was Lewis. Warnings were issued after a 2-0 pitch nearly hit him. Lewis was then hit on the next pitch from Christiani, and moved toward the mound. He was intercepted by Hillcats catcher Jordan Wideman, but both benches and bullpens cleared. After a 22 minute delay, four players and one manager were ejected. Hillcats manager Pat Kelly and pitcher Christiani were ejected. Lewis, Escobar and Loman were ejected after the incident.
When all was said and done, one run scored in the inning because the hit-by-pitch was with the bases loaded. The Dash led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Hillcats scored in the bottom of the seventh after the first two men reached on singles. Felix Perez scored on the double play groundout by Neftali Soto.
The Cats tried to rally again in the ninth. Perez walked to lead off the inning, and advanced to second on Brodie Greene's single. Josh Fellhauer drew a one-out walk to load the bases. With two outs, Shane Carlson drove in one run, and Wideman walked to score the second run. But Kyle Day grounded out to end the ballgame.
Avery threw five and one-third innings and gave up four runs, two earned. He struck out three, but was credited with the loss, his third of the season. Justin Freeman and Donnie Joseph threw two scoreless outings to finish the game after Christiani
Lynchburg takes tomorrow off before opening up a three-game series with Northern Division rival Wilmington. The Hillcats will throw Mark Serrano (3-6, 4.42) in the series opener against the Blue Rocks.
