Pelicans Split Doubleheader at Dash

Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, split a doubleheader with the Winston-Salem Dash Tuesday, winning 6-3 before falling 4-0 at BB&T Ballpark.

Myrtle Beach was nearly no-hit in the first game, going five innings before Odubel Herrera reached on an infield single in the sixth to break up Spencer Arroyo's gem. The Pelicans wound up completely turning the tables on the Dash, scoring two runs in the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Herrera would score on a triple by Jared Hoying, who came in on a single by Christian Villanueva.

That lead was short-lived, however, a homerun by Trayce Thompson in the bottom of the sixth gave a 3-2 advantage back to Winston-Salem. But that lead would not stand either. Myrtle Beach plated four runs in the top of the seventh to win in the last at-bat for the sixth time in 2012.

The rally began with a one-out single from Edwin Garcia off reliever Terance Marin, who was making just his second appearance since a promotion from Low-A. Herrera then reached on a bunt single in front of a Cafe Martinez RBI single to tie the game at three. Jared Hoying was then intentionally walked to load the bases and set up the double play. The walk ended Marin's night, with Taylor Thompson summoned to relieve Marin. He promptly allowed a sac fly to Villanueva and a two run single to Tomas Telis. The RBI for Telis were his first in 19 games. Myrtle Beach led 6-3, winning by the same margin.

Kyle Hendricks was excellent again on the mound. He turned in his fifth quality start in seven appearances this year, going a complete game seven without walking a batter and allowing three runs on eight hits. He won his first game of the season. It was also his first career complete game.

The backend of the double-dip was not as generous, however. The Pelicans fell 4-0 on a brilliant outing by spot starter Jon Bachanov for W-S. The righty struck out nine in six innings to earn his fourth win. The Birds mustered only two hits, including a Brett Nicholas double in the second.

Myrtle Beach continues its roadtrip to Winston-Salem Wednesday at 12 noon. Pregame coverage begins on FOX Sports 1050AM and 101.9FM at 11:45. For more information head online to MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
