THE HILLCATS: Last night, the Hillcats beat the Wilmington Blue Rocks 5-4...3B Edward Salcedo hit a two-run shot in the second inning, 'Cats led 2-0...Wilmington came back and led 3-2 after back-to-back homers from 1B Brian Fletcher and CF Brett Eibner in the fourth...Tied 4-4 in the sixth, Hillcats 2B Tommy La Stella hit a solo shot to give the 'Cats their ultimate lead of 5-4...RHP Brett Cammons earned his first save of the season as he got the final five outs for Lynchburg...The Hillcats are now 21-14 and remain in first place in the Northern Division...
VS. WILMINGTON: Lynchburg took two of three from the Blue Rocks last week in Wilmington, and the series opener last night...Currently lead the season series 3-1...Last year the Hillcats won the season series 10-9, with one game in Wilmington getting cancelled...The 'Cats were 6-4 hosting Wilmington in 2011...
MORE ACTION, SAME RESULT: RHP Cody Martin (LYN) and RHP Jason Adam (WIL) met on the mound last Wednesday and gave up a combined one run in 12.1 innings...Adam surrendered the lone run on a solo homer and the game ended 1-0...Last night, both pitchers were touched up for one of their worst outings of the year...Adam gave up five earned runs on seven hits and has now lost four straight starts...Martin gave up a season-high ten hits...He allowed four runs in six innings which was just good enough for the win...Both pitchers struck out season-lows (for a start)...Martin (3), and Adam (0)...Martin is still second in the circuit with 45 strikeouts this season...
BY THE NUMBERS: The Blue Rocks are dominating the season series against Lynchburg...Wilmington is hitting .288 and their pitchers have posted a 2.83 ERA as opposed the Hillcats' .246 average and 3.34 ERA through the first four games of the season series...Lynchburg has committed six errors to the Blue Rocks seven, but the Wilmington miscues have led to seven unearned runs...Hillcats have let up just two unearned...Overall, Lynchburg has outscored Wilmington 18-15...
POWER BOOST: The Hillcats went deep twice last night...3B Edward Salcedo snapped a 65-at-bat homerless stretch with a two-run shot in the second, and 2B Tommy La Stella left the yard for the first time in 51 at-bats in the sixth...It was the first multi-homer game for the team since the Hillcats lost slugger Evan Gattis to Double-A April 30...In 14 games without Gattis, the 'Cats have just seven round-trippers (0.5 per game)...They belted 26 over the fence in their first 21 games with Gattis (1.24 per game)...
A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN: The Hillcats welcome another fellow Northern Division foe to town this week in the the Wilmington Blue Rocks...The 'Cats are currently 12-3 against their divisional rivals, 5-1 at home...Lynchburg sits in first place in the division at 21-14...They are the only team with an above .500 record...Wilmington currently sits in second place at 15-21, 6.5 games back...Meanwhile, every team in the Southern Division is .500 or better...
LET'S PLAY THREE: Lynchburg plays its third four-game series of the season this week against the Blue Rocks...They have lost both prior four-game sets 3-1...The first was in Zebulon, NC against the Carolina Mudcats and the second in Lynchburg, also at the hands of Carolina...In three-game series' however, the 'Cats are 7-1 with two three-game sweeps...Their only three-game series loss was in Salem (4/16-4/18)...
GETTIN' HIS GROOVE BACK: 2B Tommy La Stella went 1-for-4 yesterday with a solo home run, his third of the season...The blast put the Hillcats ahead 5-4 and was his second go-ahead shot...The 'Cats are now 3-0 when he leaves the yard...His 27 RBI rank second in the league behind former 'Cat Evan Gattis (29)...He is now 3-for-5 since snapping an 0-for-17 slide in his final at-bat Saturday night...Went hitless in three straight games (5/8-5/11)...Prior to that, he had only three games all season in which he didn't have a hit...In the midst of the slide, his average dipped to a season-low .287 heading into Sunday...Had been hitting over .300 until going 0-for-4 on Friday...
ON THE RISE: 1B Chris Garcia went 3-for-4 yesterday with a a double and an RBI...He has now hit safely in twelve of his last fourteen games and has reached base in each of those games...Hitting .455 (20-for-44) in that stretch with five doubles, two home runs, 13 RBI, and nine runs scored...Has raised his batting average 58 points in that span...Currently leads the Hillcats with 23 walks, which is also second-most in the league...Now has an on-base percentage of .472, which ranks third in the circuit...Currently batting .359, good for third-best...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Santiago Garrido signed with the Royals as a minor league free agent in 2007 when he was 17 years-old...From Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic...Debuted with the DSL Royals...Went 1-4 with a 3.35 ERA...Last three years has posted ERAs over 5.00...Spent both 2009 and 2010 with Rookie-level Idaho Falls...Moved up to Low-A Kane County in 2011...Joined Kane Country in late May and stayed the rest of the season...Went 2-5, with a 6.34 ERA in 19 appearances, nine starts...Dominated back in Kane Country this season...Went 3-0, with a 0.68 ERA through six appearances, three starts...Was part of piggy-back rotation spot...Currently piggy-backing with RHP Sugar Ray Marimon who will relieve him tonight...Marimon started last Thursday, and Garrido was first out of the pen...Makes his first start for Wilmington tonight...0-0, with a 0.00 ERA through one relief appearance with the Blue Rocks...Pitched two scoreless frames last week against the Hillcats...Blue Rocks won that game 7-2...
