Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Lynchburg, VA (May 15, 2012) - The Lynchburg Hillcats are proud to announce that RHP Cody Martin has been named the Carolina League's "Pitcher of the Week " for the week of May 7 - 13. Martin is the first Hillcat pitcher to be honored and the second Hillcat to receive a league-wide award. Catcher Evan Gattis was named "Player of the Week" for the week of April 6 - 15.

Martin's nod as "Pitcher of the Week" was powered by a stellar performance in Wilmington against the Blue Rocks on the 9th of May. Martin went 6+ of no-hit ball in his only start of the week. Overall, he went 7.0 innings allowing just two hits while walking two and fanning seven.

Currently, Martin leads the league with five wins, is eighth in ERA (2.83), second in strikeouts (45) and fifth in innings pitched (41.1).

The 22-year-old is in his first full season in professional baseball after being drafted in the 7th round in 2011 out of Gonzaga University. Martin was the ERA champion in his senior season at Gonzaga registering a 0.86 ERA in 25 appearances (one start). Last season between Danville in the Appalachian League and Rome in the South Atlantic League, Martin went 1-0 with 1.48 ERA in 22 games. He allowed 18 hits and four earned runs in 24.1innings. He also struck out 35 and walked four. Because of that performance, Martin was named an Organizational All-Star by MiLB.com. Before this season, Martin never started a game in professional baseball.
