Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The Pensacola Pelicans signed a player from their own field today, inking infielder Lee Huggins, who played for the University of West Florida earlier this season. The 6'3" 230 pound right hander will join the Pelicans before Monday's game against the Grand Prairie Air Hogs.
Hailing from Bay Minette, Alabama, Huggins batted .309 for the Argonauts in 2009, leading the team with 37 RBI. His 11 doubles and three triples were tied for the team lead. On March 17 Huggins was named the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week following an impressive seven-day span that saw him hit .455 and drive in 10 runs, marking at least one of each in every game.
After the collegiate season ended, Huggins began playing for the South Louisiana Pipeliners of the Continental League. In nine games this season Huggins has already clouted a homer and a double, driving in three runs while scoring three times himself.
The Pelicans roster now sits at 20 players, two below the league maximum of 22.
Huggins joins the Pelicans currently in first place in the South Division of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.
