El Paso Diablos News Release
August 10, 2009 Sioux City, IA - Justin Mallett was named the American Association pitcher earlier in the day and then proceeded to show the Sioux City Explorers why leading the Diablos to a 4-3 win at Lewis and Clark Park on Monday night. Gerardo Verastegui helped out Mallett by providing the punch for the offense to help the Diablos to their second straight win.
Mallett (5-4) had his string of complete games ended, but he did pitch two outs into the eighth inning allowing only two earned runs on eight hits and a season high 10 strike outs. He threw 149 pitches in his performance before handing it over to Mike Cervera who came in for the four out save, and pitched very well in the clutch to pick up his fifth save of the season.
Gerardo Verastegui led the Diablos offense going 3-4 with three doubles and had a part of three out of the four runs scored, including driving in the winning run. Verastegui went into the game with only two doubles the whole season, and struck for three in one game. Eddy Rodriguez and Mike Provencher also came through with two hits apiece.
El Paso took the early lead on a second inning Verastegui double driving in Provencher, and they made it 2-0 when Verastegui scored on a throwing error in the third. The game was tied up by the Explorers with two outs in the sixth inning on a two run home run by Justin Nelson. Three errors on one base runner allowed Dustin Jones to score the go ahead run in the seventh inning, but the Diablos made sure it wasn't the winning run. With two outs in the eighth inning Provencher tied the game with a RBI single, and Verastegui plated the winning run with a RBI double.
