Wingnuts Sign Ashner, Blasi Out Indefinitely

WICHITA, KS- The Wingnuts signed right-handed pitcher Ryan Ashner on Monday afternoon. A native of Overland Park, KS, Ashner appeared in nine games this season for the Frontier League's River City Rascals, going 4-0 in 12 relief outings. The 25-year old had a 3.57 ERA with 15 strikeouts and only four walks in 17.2 IP. Ashner began his career in 2008, going 1-0 with one save for River City. Ashner had a 2.11 ERA last season, striking out 18 and walking four in 21.1 IP.

To make room for Ashner, the Wingnuts released right-hander Tyler Rhoden. Rhoden was 2-3 with a 5.10 ERA in 29 appearances. Ashner will be in uniform and available for tonight's series opener at Lincoln.

Meanwhile, the Wingnuts sent center fielder Nick Blasi back to Wichita Monday afternoon for further evaluation of his left cheek. Blasi was struck in the face with a pitch in the top of the first inning on Sunday at Sioux City. Blasi remained in the game until the bottom of the fifth. The former Shocker is hitting .330 with 14 runs and 10 RBI over his last 23 games. Blasi has fielded the fifth most chances amongst American Association outfielders, committing just two errors and is 16 for 20 in stolen base attempts. Blasi's status for the rest of the season is uncertain.

The Wingnuts open a four-game series tonight against the Lincoln Saltdogs at 7:05 p.m. Brad Davis will be on the mound against Lincoln's Brian Campbell.
