Pelicans Route Shorebirds 11-5 on Thursday Night

On the first Pirate Night of the season, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans defended their ship with an 11-5 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds in game three of the series. With the win, the Pelicans moved up to 35-13 on the season and gained a three-game lead in the South division over the Charleston RiverDogs. Delmarva slipped to 16-32 with the loss. The Pelicans came out in special black uniforms with the Pelican and Crossbones logo while the stadium was decked out in pirate gear for the occasion.

Myrtle Beach launched five extra-base hits with Ethan Hearn (2-4, 3B, 2B, 2 RBI, R, BB) leading the crew with two RBI hits. Jacob Wetzel (1-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB) brought home two with a double in the first and Juan Mora (3-5, 2B, RBI, R) posted three hits to lead Myrtle Beach in that category. Thursday night marked the seventh time the Pelicans have scored in double digits this season.

Tyler Santana (5-0) earned the win with 4 2/3 innings in relief with five strikeouts while sacrificing two earned runs off four hits and a walk. Luke Little started the contest and only lasted two frames with one unearned run off two walks and three hit-by-pitches.

Delmarva's lineup was held in check once again with just five hits for the evening and five runs. Noelberth Romero (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB) hit a late two-run home run and logged the only multi-hit game. Trendon Craig (1-3, 2B, 3 RBI) brought home three runs on a third-inning double.

Thursday's Shorebirds' starter Juan De Los Santos (1-6) took the loss with five earned runs off six hits and four walks through his 3 2/3 innings. All four Shorebirds' pitchers gave up at least one run in the defeat.

Myrtle Beach took the lead first for the third game in a row with a three-run first inning. Mora singled to lead off and Kevin Alcantara singled with one out while BJ Murray walked to load the bases. Wetzel came up and lined a double in the left-field corner to score two runs. Stevens followed with a sacrifice fly hit to right field to put the Pelicans up 3-0 early.

The third inning featured a three-run top half as Delmarva got back in the game. Mishael Deson walked as Little came out of the game. Tyler Santana came out of the bullpen and fielded a grounder by Elio Prado. Santana threw wild to second as Deson was safe to put two runners on. Romero walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Craig cleared the bases with a double to left as the game tied up 3-3.

Myrtle Beach followed with runs in three-straight innings from the fourth to the sixth. Hearn lined a double to left-center with one out in the fourth to score Frank Hernandez. Hearn came in on a single by Mora to put the Pelicans in front 5-3.

Felix Stevens grounded out to first with runners on second and third as Murray scored for a 6-3 lead in the fifth. Reginald Preciado hit a sacrifice fly and Hearn tripled to left field to score another run as the Pelicans broke the game open 8-3.

Two more scored in the sixth as Hernandez hit a ball to Isaac De Leon at shortstop with the bases loaded. De Leon's throw to second went wild as two runs came in to extend the Myrtle Beach lead to 10-3.

One more came in the eighth for the Pelicans with Hernandez hitting a single to right field as Wetzel scored to make it 11-3.

Romero homered to left field in the top of the ninth on a two-run shot for Delmarva's first runs since the third inning. The game ended on Craig's double play as the Pelicans won their third straight game 11-5.

Myrtle Beach and Delmarva will meet for game four of the series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
