Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, dropped a 13-inning marathon Monday, falling 1-0 to the Frederick Keys at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

The opener of a three game series ended past midnight Tuesday morning, June 12th. The 12th marks the anniversary of the longest game in Carolina League history, the 23 inning showdown between the Pelicans and Kinston Indians, played at Kinston's Grainger Stadium last season.

Frederick scored the decisive run on a play meant to set up the winner. Bobby Stevens led off the 13th with a double over Jared Hoying's head in leftfield. He was then sacrificed to third by Michael Mosby, who was out at first base 2-3, the catcher to the first baseman. The play, however, left home uncovered and Stevens scooted home to score for a 1-0 lead.

Myrtle Beach had its fair share of opportunities, leaving the bases loaded in both the fourth and 12th innings. Brett Nicholas was also thrown out at home trying to score in the second. The Pelicans left 14 runners on base. All 10 Pelicans hits were singles.

On the mound the Pelicans got outstanding performances from Wilmer Font, Ben Rowen and Francisco Mendoza. Font and Rowen both went five shutout innings and Mendoza went three, allowing a run. All three pitcher's allowed only two hits.

Myrtle Beach and Frederick meet for game two of their four game series Tuesday at 7:05pm. It's Team Tuesday, with the first 1,000 fans receiving a poster giveaway of Christian Villanueva. Cody Buckel throws for the Pelicans. Orioles top prospect Dylan Bundy is not scheduled to pitch in the series. For more information call 843-918-6000 or visit MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
