Three Keys Named Carolina League All-Stars
June 11, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick, MD - Baltimore Orioles' top prospect Dylan Bundy, along with Ty Kelly and Jeremy Nowak, were named 2012 Carolina League All-Stars and will participate in the annual All-Star game, held this year at Winston-Salem on Tuesday, June 17th.
It's the first time since 2010 the Keys have had at least three players sent to the annual showcase event, which features the Carolina League All-Stars taking on the California League's own crop of All-Stars. Past Keys selections include current Orioles Jake Arrieta (2008), Zach Britton (2009), Nick Markakis (2005), Brian Matusz (2009), Nolan Reimold (2006), and Matt Wieters (2008).
Highlighting the group sent to Winston-Salem is Bundy, who at 19 years old is the youngest player selected to the Carolina League All-Star team. Named by ESPN's Keith Law as the best prospect in Minor League Baseball, the Sperry, Oklahoma native holds a 3.00 ERA through three starts in the Carolina League.
Considered by Baseball America as the Orioles' best prospect, Bundy now holds a combined 1.00 ERA and 0.533 WHIP through 11 starts with both Delmarva and Frederick. This is Bundy's first professional season after being chosen fourth overall in last year's draft. Bundy was the Baseball America, USA Today, and Gatorade Player of the Year for Owasso (OK) High School. Bundy's brother Bobby was the Keys lone all-star selection in 2011.
Kelly was the lone Keys player selected as a starter and will play third base. Rated by Baseball America as having the best strike-zone discipline in the Orioles organization, Kelly's .426 on-base percentage is third-highest in the Carolina League while his .321 batting average ranks fifth. Last year while with Delmarva, Kelly was named a South Atlantic League All-Star and in 2009 was named a New York-Penn League All-Star with Aberdeen.
Nowak, whose .316 batting average ranks seventh in the Carolina League, will be making his first-ever all-star appearance. The Cheektowaga, New York native leads the Keys in hits and has been on base or has recorded an RBI in a staggering 45 of 50 games this season.
The league's All-Stars were voted on by members of the media, coaches, and general managers.
