
Pelicans offensive outburst falls short in 11-10 loss to Red Sox

SALEM, Va. (June 3, 2016) - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans pounded out 13 hits against Salem Red Sox pitching but blew a six-run lead in an 11-10 loss Friday at LewisGale Field.
The Birds' ten runs was their second-highest output of the year. In total, the Pelicans (28-26) and Red Sox (36-19) combined for 21 runs on 30 hits, the highest-scoring game the Pelicans have played in this season.
The offense began early for both teams. Rashad Crawford began the game with a single up the middle before Gleyber Torres socked a double to center, one of a career-high three he would hit on the night. After Yasiel Balaguert walked, Jason Vosler clubbed a two-run double to right to give the Pelicans a 1-0 lead. The next batter was Gioskar Amaya, who who tripled to the wall in left-center, giving Myrtle Beach a 3-0 lead. Amaya would later cross home on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0.
In the bottom of the first, Yoan Moncada began the inning by doubling to right before a sacrifice bunt moved him to third. Mike Meyers proceeded to drive in Moncada with a sacrifice fly to make the game 4-1.
In the top of the second, Trey Martin singled for Myrtle Beach to start the frame. After a sacrifice and an out, Torres came through by delivering another double to center to give the Pelicans a 5-1 lead.
An inning later, the Birds got singles from Balaguert, Vosler and Amaya to take a 6-1 lead. After an error and a strikeout, Charcer Burks connected on a sacrifice fly to plate Vosler and give the Pelicans a 7-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the third, Moncada walked before stealing second. After a wild pitch. Mauricio Dubon doubled to the wall in left to score Moncada and cut the Pelicans lead to 7-2.
With the top of the order due up in the fourth, the Pelicans got a third double from Gleyber Torres before Ian Happ knocked him in with a single up the middle to make the score 8-2.
Myrtle Beach scored in all four innings that Travis Lakins pitched for Salem. The right-hander surrendered eight runs on 11 hits over four innings.
With the score still 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Myrlte Beach starter Jonathan Martinez gave up a third double to Moncada before Dubon laid down a bunt single. Martinez got two of the next three batters to set up a bases loaded, two-out situation. Danny Mars followed with a single to center to cut the Birds' lead to 8-4. Jordan Betts then singled to make it 8-5. After reliever Daury Torrez (0-1) replaced Martinez, Ben Moore doubled to right-center to score two more for Salem and trim the Pelicans' lead to 8-7.
After reliever Jamie Callahan (3-2) walked a pair in the top of the sixth, Vosler came up with a two-run double to left-center to extend the Pelicans lead to 10-7.
With Torrez back on for the bottom of the sixth, Dubon singled before stealing second. Nick Longhi followed with a single before Rafael Devers recorded a single of his own to plate Dubon and cut the Myrtle Beach advantage to 10-8.
Torrez issued a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh to put runners on first and second. A Dubon RBI single drew the Red Sox to within one before Meyers lined a two-run double to give Salem their first lead of the game.
Reliever Simon Mercedes came in after that to work two shutout innings and earn the save in his first Advanced-A outing since 2014.
The Pelicans and Red Sox combined for 13 extra-base hits in the game and eight players recorded multi-hit games.
The Pelicans will return home on Saturday to host the Potomac Nationals at 7:05 p.m., beginning a four-game series. RHP Zach Hedges (4-4, 2.35 ERA) gets the start for Myrtle Beach, while RHP Matthew Crownover (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his High-A debut for Potomac.
