Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wilmington Blue Rocks (19-33) fell behind early against the Winston-Salem Dash (21-34) as Zach Lovvorn allowed two runs in the bottom of the first, but Joshua Banuelos belted a blast in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2. The dinger proved pivotal because rain came to Winston-Salem and pounded BB&T Ballpark, forcing the two teams to halt play in the top of the eighth inning. The game is currently suspended and will be resumed on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Blue Crew needed a great start after depleting their entire pitching staff on Friday night in their 16-11 loss against the Lynchburg Hillcats. What they got from Lovvorn was a great quality start as the righty went six full innings while only allowing two runs. However, it did not start off with much quality as the Dash cracked the righty for two in the opening frame with the use of small ball. Hunter Jones singled to begin the inning and proceeded to steal second. A bunt single pushed the situation to first and third. A wild pitch by Lovvorn allowed the runner at first to move to second and a following grounder to first plated the first run of the game. Lovvorn once again had an offering slip away from him, this time allowing a run to score as the Dash jumped ahead 2-0.

It would stay 2-0 until the top of the third inning when Robert Pehl got things going with a walk. That set the scene for Banuelos' two run shot. With the game tied 2-2 the teams traded zeroes and endured a delay in the seventh before an eighth inning deluge forced the suspension of activities at BB&T with two outs and the bases empty in the top of the frame. Banuelos' home run essentially serves as a game saving homer because without the runs, the Rocks would have suffered a 2-0 shortened defeat.

As it stands the two teams will resume the game on Sunday at 1 p.m. and play their normally scheduled Sunday game either at 2 p.m. or a half hour after the completion of the resumed game. That second game will feature the Blue Crew's RHP Corey Ray (1-1, 4.63) against RHP Spencer Adams (5-3, 3.88).
