Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WOODBRIDGE , VA - The Pelicans held off a late surge by the Potomac Nationals to claim a 7-6 win and even the series at a game apiece.
After Hassan Pena retired the side in order in the first inning, the Pelicans rallied for six runs off the Potomac starter in the second frame. Six of the Pelicans' first seven batters in the inning reached, and all scored to give the Birds an early 6-0 lead. The Pelicans sent 10 batters to the plate with five collecting a hit and two others drawing walks. Donell Linares drove home the final two of the inning with a two-run single with two outs.
Potomac responded with a run in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by Chris Marrero. That would be the only baserunner Pelican starter Cole Rohrbough would allow until he issued a leadoff walk to Marrero in the fifth.
The Pelicans used an RBI double by C.J. Lee that plated Chris Shehan to go up 7-1 in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the inning, the first four batters all reached and scored against Rohrbough to end his night. The rally was capped by a two-run home run by Brian Peacock to pull the P-Nats within two.
Tommy Palica (4-1) replaced Rohrbough and pitched two innings of relief without allowing a run to earn the win. He walked two and struck out five in his first appearance since returning to the Pelicans.
Cory Gearrin (10) pitched the ninth for the Pelicans to earn the save. He allowed one run on three hits and left the tying run stranded at third base when Michael Martinez grounded out to first base to end the game.
Hassan (0-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs on five hits over just three innings.
The Pelicans look to take the series tomorrow night as they wrap up the six-game road trip. The Birds will send right-hander Jacob Thompson to the mound against and unnamed starter for Potomac. The Pelicans will return home following the game to open a four-game set with the Kinston Indians at BB&T Coastal Field Thursday night at 7:05.
