Kinston Indians News Release

Tribe Talk....

Dashed Again-Kinston suffered another tough one-run loss to Winston-Salem Monday Night at Gene Hooks Field, losing 3-2. Kinston trailed from the start as Jimmy Gallagher hit a solo home run off Indians starter Paolo Espino in the bottom of the first. The Dash would add two more in the bottom of the second on a John Curtis two-RBI double. Espino (3-6) settled down after that though, retiring the final 11 batters he would face. He ended up tossing seven strong innings, allowing three runs on five hits and had four strikeouts. He walked none and hit two batters. The Indians would get on the board in the top of the third when Lonnie Chisenhall hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Richard Martinez. The game would stay 3-1 until the ninth when Kinston would get a leadoff single by Ronald Rivas followed by a walk to Davis. Martinez would then sacrifice them both over to second and third. Montero then came up and hit a shot off the glove of Dash pitcher Tyson Corley that settled behind the mound for an RBI infield single to make the game 3-2 as Rivas scored. But with the tying run on second, Fedroff hit a frozen rope to second baseman Dale Mollenhauer who caught the ball and tagged second for the game-ending double play. Levi Maxwell got the win in relief, tossing two and 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on three hits, a walk and struck out two. The UNO OH-NO Curse- It is the K-Tribe's third straight one-run defeat and its league-leading 26th one run loss of the season. At 10-26 in one-run contests, the only team with more one-run losses in all of minor league or major league baseball is Double-A Arkansas of the Texas League with 27 one-run losses.. Salem had the most one-run losses in the Carolina League last season with 26 all year. RBI Machine-Lonnie Chisenhall's first sacrifice fly on the season last night was also his 70th RBI of the year, second most in the league. The Carolina League All-Star now has an RBI in four straight games and six of the last seven games. Still Starting Strong-Even though the K-Tribe is just 5-10 in its last 15 games, you can't fault the team's starting pitching. In those 13 games, Kinston starters have allowed just 24 earned runs in 89 innings (2.43 ERA). Over those games, the Indians have allowed 15 unearned runs and the bullpen has allowed 34 runs (28 earned) in 38 innings for an ERA of 6.63. Four of Kinston's five starters though have a July ERA of under 3.10. As a staff, the Indians starting rotation (Eric Berger, Russell Young, Alexander Perez, Paolo Espino, Mike McGuire and Ryan Morris) has a 2.69 ERA in July (41 ER/ 137.1 IP).

Troubles In The Triad-The K-Tribe has now lost nine of the last 10 against the Dash. Winston-Salem took two of three from Kinston last week at Historic Grainger Stadium. The last time the Indians played the Dash at Wake Forest Baseball Park was on June 5th-7th, where Winston-Salem handed Kinston its first four game sweep since July 28-31, 2005 in Wilmington. The K-Tribe have hit and pitched better than the Dash in the season series, however, as the Indians are hitting .260 with an ERA of 3.56, while Winston-Salem is hitting .249 with an ERA of 3.72. What's hurt the K-Tribe has been its defense, committing 21 errors in 17 games vs. the Dash leading to 19 unearned runs.

Look Who We Got Our Haines On-The newest member of the K-Tribe is infielder Kyle Haines who replaces Eric Perlozzo on the roster. Haines played in 19 games this season for Double-A Akron, hitting .233 with two RBI and seven runs. The Olney, IL native was drafted out of Eastern Illinois in 2004 by the San Francisco Giants in the 31st round. He hit .261 in 105 games knocking in 43 with AA Connecticut last season and was an Eastern League All-Star.
