CarL1 Lynchburg Hillcats

Hillcats at Blue Rocks Tonight

July 28, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

THE HILLCATS: Lynchburg got blanked by Wilmington 1-0 in game one of a three-game series at Frawley Stadium on Monday night...That dropped the Hillcats to 2-2 on their current six-game road trip that continues tonight with game five of the Northern Division swing...

VS. WILMINGTON: The Hillcats are 5-9 against the Blue Rocks this season and are 2-6 at Frawley Stadium...Wilmington is the only team in the Carolina League with a winning record versus the Hillcats this season...Last season the Rocks topped the Cats in the season series 11-9 and were 6-4 at home...Wilmington has the all-time advantage over Lynchburg 171-121 and they are 90-58 in their home confines...

FRUSTRATING FRAWLEY: Last night's loss to the Blue Rocks was the Hillcats fourth straight loss at Wilmington and they are now 2-6 this season at Frawley Stadium, easily their worst record at any opponents home this year...They have now gone 19 consecutive innings without scoring a run on Judy Johnson Field and have only scored one run in their last 35 innings played on the riverfront (over four games)...After scoring just two runs in a four-game series in early June against the Rocks in which they dropped three out of four, Lynchburg was shutout for the third time in four games at Wilmington last night with their 1-0 loss...In the last five games played in Delaware the Cats pitching staff is posting a 2.04 ERA (eight earned runs in 35 and 1/3 innings pitched), but Lynchburg is 1-4 in those contests...

FROM ALL TO NOTHING: Lynchburg swatted a season-high 20 hits on Sunday night in their 11-4 victory over the Keys...They countered that last night by only mustering four hits in getting shutout last night for the seventh time this season and the third time by Wilmington...The 20-hit performance topped the 19 hits they had at Potomac on May 22nd in their 13-5 win...Eight of the nine Hillcats in the line-up collected a hit and seven of them had a multi-hit game...Last season the most hits the Cats had was 18 and that was against Wilmington on April 13th at City Stadium...The most hits they have ever smacked was 24 at Kinston on April 27th, 2005...

BACK IN THE SADDLE: RHP Matt McSwain allowed just one run in seven innings of work last night and took a tough luck loss...Despite the result it was the best start for McSwain in five outings...In his previous four starts he was posting a 6.14 ERA and had seen his earned run average raise from 2.93 to 3.60...Before those four starts he had gone nine straight starts lasting five innings or more and allowing two runs or less...

ROLLIN' ROBLES: RHP Moises Robles worked a scoreless inning last night in the Hillcats series opening loss...The righty has not allowed an earned run in his last 17 and 2/3 innings of work...Over that time he has lowered his ERA from 6.55 to 2.51...

WALK THIS WAY: OF Jared Keel pinch-hit in the ninth inning last night and drew the only walk of the game... During the Hillcats recent six-game homestand he walked ten times, had his fourth three walk contest of the season and on the current six-game road trip he has walked in every game...In 65 games played this season Keel has walked a team-leading 55 times...Despite the fact that he missed the month of April with a knee injury, he is third in the Carolina League in base on balls...He is also second in the league in on-base percentage with a .414 clip, only behind teammate C Kris Watts (.455)...

HUBER'S HUGE NIGHT: UTIL Erik Huber went 6-for-6 on Sunday night with a double, three RBI and two runs scored...The six hits were a career-high and the most by a Hillcat this season...Four times this season a Cat had collected four hits before Huber's six-hit performance a night ago...Huber had five four-hit games while with West Virginia this season, including three in the month of June that he batted an even .400 in...The six hits matches the most ever by a Hillcat as only two others have had six base knocks in the same ballgame (Justin Martin on May 19th, 2001 and Ray Navaraete on June 9th, 2002)...

TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Danny Duffy was selected in the 3rd round of the 2007 Amateur Entry Draft by Kansas City out of Cabrillo high school in California...He began his Royals career with the Arizona Royals that fall and went 2-3 with a 1.45 ERA in 11 games (nine starts)...He pitched the next season in 2008 with full-season Low-A Burlington and went 8-4 with a 2.20 ERA in 17 starts for the Bees...That year he struck out 102 batters in 81 and 2/3 innings...This year he advanced to High-A with Wilmington and has posted a 8-3 record with a 3.26 earned run average in 18 starts...Duffy was ranked as the sixth best prospect in the Royals minor league organization prior to the season by Baseball America...The lefty has made three starts against Lynchburg, with no-decisions and a 0.61 ERA (one earned run in 14 and 2/3 innings)...He has won his last two outings and allowed just one earned run (13 and 2/3 innings)...
