Nationals Game Notes July 28th

July 28, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

TODAY: The Potomac Nationals enjoyed an offensive explosion on Monday night and will hope there are a few sparks remaining for game two of their three-game series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

The sizzling P-Nats continue to play their best baseball from comforts of Pfitzner Stadium where the home team has a Carolina League-best 10-2 record since the All-Star Break after winning just 14 of their first 32 contests from Woodbridge, Va. With their 14-9 triumph on Monday night, the P-Nats have won four consecutive home games for the first time this season.

TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: LHP Cole Rohrbough, 21, was signed as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Braves on June 1, 2007 out of Western Nevada Community College. He holds the distinction as the final draft-and-follow player signed by the Braves befroe MLB did away with the practice. He entered the season facing seriously high expectations as he's listed as the top left-handed pitcher and sixth best overall prospect in the Braves' minor league system by Baseball America. He dazzled in his first professional season, appearing in 14 games (13 starts) between Danville and Rome and combining to go 5-1 with a 1.17 ERA. He was hampered by an ankle injury and rotator cuff tendinitis last year and went 5-6 in 18 appearances. Rohrbough spent nearly a month this season on the D.L. and enters today's start with the P-Nats at 4-6 with a 5.73 ERA.

Potomac has had three cracks against this promising lefty with Rohrbough going 1-2 with a 6.17 ERA. The southpaw suffered through his shortest outing of the season against the P-Nats on July 7th when he lasted just 2.2 innings allowing six runs and five hits and even walked five in the Pelicans' 10-1 loss from BB&T Coastal Field. He is still seeking consistency in the Carolina League as he boasts an ERA of 7.10 (41ER/52.0IP) since June 1st with opponents batting .301 against Rohrbough this season. Still in possession of a what scouts describe as a "nasty" breaking ball, the southpaw allowed just two runs over 6.1 innings and struck out seven piggybacking for Tim Hudson who made an MLB rehab start last Thursday for the Pelicans.
