Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 16, 2011) - Terry Doyle was sharp over eight innings, but Winston-Salem couldn't do much damage against Pelicans starter Joe Wieland and fell to Myrtle Beach, 3-2. Monday's rainy series opener at BB&T Ballpark was only Winston's second loss in the last ten games and fourth in a row against Myrtle Beach.
The game didn't start until 8:15 p.m. after a rain delay lasted one hour and 15 minutes. Myrtle Beach (23-14) wasted no time with getting the offense going, as Jared Hoying hit the first pitch he saw into right-center field and legged out a triple. After Dash starter Terry Doyle struck out Leury Garcia, Ryan Strausborger grounded a ball to the left of the mound that Doyle bobbled and threw errant of home plate. Hoying scored on the error by Doyle to put the Pelicans up 1-0.
After the top of the first inning, the skies opened up, causing a 20 minute rain delay before the Dash (17-20) could come to bat.
Play resumed in the bottom of the first inning, and Pelicans starter Joe Wieland set down the Dash in order. Jared Mitchell was the last to bat in the inning and was ejected for arguing with home plate umpire Aaron Roberts. Jose Martinez came in to play in his stead
Though the rain kept falling for much of the ballgame, Doyle and Wieland started to find their groove. Wieland didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and after allowing the run, Doyle retired nine of the next ten hitters.
In the sixth inning, Myrtle added some insurance. Garcia reached on a bunt single, and then scored on Strausborger's double. After advancing to third on a fly out by Zach Zaneski, Strausborger crossed the plate after Mitch Hilligoss' infield single to put the score at 3-0 Pelicans.
Winston-Salem responded in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run from Tyler Saladino. The long ball was Saladino's second in as many games at BB&T Ballpark.
Kyle Colligan added another home run for the Dash in the eighth inning, making the score 3-2. It was the first homer of the season for Colligan. The Dash put the tying run at second base in that inning, but stranded it.
The Dash could not mount a rally in the ninth, after reliever Ryan Kelly ended the game with five consecutive strikeouts over the last two innings.
Doyle (0-5) got the loss even though he tied a career-high with eight innings pitched. He gave up three runs (two earned) and struck out four and was the first Dash pitcher to throw eight innings this season. Wieland (4-2) picked up the win after 6.1 innings where he struck out eight. Kelly earned his fourth save in as many chances.
Winston-Salem and Myrtle Beach continue their series Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. Winston-Salem throws RHP Andre Rienzo (1-1, 2.95) against LHP Robbie Erlin (3-1, 2.14). Fans can catch all the action starting at 6:45 p.m. at www.wsdash.com .
