Pelicans Game Notes
May 16, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
- RHP Joe Wieland (3-2, 1.66) at RHP Terry Doyle (0-4, 4.17)
PACKED HOUSE: There was hardly a seat to be had at BB&T Coastal Field on Sunday. 5,188 were in attendance for the Pelicans' loss. Yesterday featured the Birds' largest Sunday crowd of 2011, boosted by over 2,000 teachers that came to the ballpark for Teachers' Appreciation Day. It was the second-largest crowd of the season in Myrtle Beach, only the attendance of 5,343 that saw the Birds walk-off against Winston-Salem on April 20 was bigger.
J00000000000000000E: Lefty reliever Joe Ortiz is on quite a roll for the Pelicans. In posting two more zeroes in Sunday's loss, the diminutive Venezuelan has worked 17 consecutive scoreless innings, spanning eight appearances. The last time anyone scored on Ortiz was on April 12 in Frederick when Garabez Rosa cracked a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Joe ranks third among Carolina League relievers in both walks per nine innings (3 BB in 18 IP) and fewest baserunners per nine innings (14 BR in 18 IP).
