Frederick Keys News Release
LHP Brian Matusz tossed four innings in his first rehab appearance of the season but would have got the loss if not for the Keys bats did not come to life in the eighth. Jacob Julius tied the game at one with a pinch hit single to right field and 2B Buck Britton put the game away with a two-run single off RHP Trevor Holder. Frederick held on for a 3-2 win and improved to 21-15 on the season.
Matusz retired the Nationals in order in his first inning of work. Potomac got to the Keys' 2009 Opening Night starter in the second. With one out, 1B Steven Souza reached on a walk. Souza stole second base and with two outs C Sandy Leon singled home Souza on a soft liner in the left field. The run was the lone blemish Matusz surrendered over his outing. The Oriole rehabber threw 60 pitches, 37 strikes, and allowed one run on two hits over four innings. He walked two and struck out two on the night.
The Keys' bats were silent against RHP Trevor Holder for the majority of the game. Through seven innings, Holder did not allow a run to score while scattering two hits and striking out three.
Frederick was able to keep the score at 1-0 due to another solid performance from the bullpen. RHP Kenny Moreland tossed three shutout innings and LHP Will Startup followed with one of his own.
Finally in the bottom of the eighth, the Keys bats awoke. DH Tyler Kolodny led off the inning with an infield single. With one down and Bobby Stevens pinch running for Kolodny, 3B Dale Mollenhauer singled to centerfield. Following a Holder strikeout of Brian Ward, Jacob Julius came through with a pinch hit RBI single to left. Holder struck out CF Steve Bumbry but uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Bumbry to reach first safely. Now with the bases loaded, Buck Britton stepped to the plate. On his 25th birthday, the Weatherford, TX continues his hot streak as he hit a two-run single into left field to give Frederick a 3-1 lead. Britton has now driven in 12 runs in his last five games.
Potomac scored a run in the ninth but RHP Sean Gleason struck out SS Jose Lozada to the end game. Gleason is now a perfect 9-for-9 in save opportunities this year.
Will Startup improved to 3-0 on the year while Trevor Holder fell to 1-5.
The Keys and Nationals return to action on Tuesday night in Frederick. LHP Rick Zagone (1-0, 0.00) will make his second start of the year for the Keys while RHP Paul Demny (1-2, 2.94) gets the ball for Potomac. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. at Harry Grove Stadium.
