Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (13-21) @ KINSTON INDIANS (14-21)

May 16th, 2011 -- 6:30 PM

Historic Grainger Stadium

RHP Zeke Spruill (1-4, 3.51) vs. RHP Brett Brach (3-2, 1.63)

THE HILLCATS: Sunday the Hillcats beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 5-3...Joey Terdoslavich broke a 3-3 tie with his 10th homer of the season, a two-run shot in the top of the sixth to put the 'Cats up for good...The Hillcats remain in fourth place in the Carolina League Northern Division, 6.5 games back the first place Frederick Keys...

VS. KINSTON: The Hillcats are 1-2 against the Indians in 2011...The two teams first met in Lynchburg this season 4/29-5/1...The first two games of the series saw each side get shut out once, followed by a hard fought rubber match that ended 3-1 in favor of the Indians...

ENDING ON A WINNING NOTE: Prior to yesterday's 5-3 win over the Pelicans, the Hillcats were 0-9 in series finales this season, and 0-2 in rubber matches of three-game series'...The 'Cats snapped both streaks with the help of starter Dimasther Delgado's second straight quality start, six innings, three runs allowed and INF Joey Terdoslavich's go ahead home run in the top of the sixth inning that put Lynchburg up 5-3...RHP Jeremy Haynes and RHP Eliecer Cardenas closed out the game with three scoreless innings of relief, Haynes earning his first hold, and Cardenas his third save as he tossed a perfect ninth frame...

WHAT ABOUT THAT SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY': After 11 games on the road this season in Southern Division ballparks the Hillcats are 3-8...Overall the 'Cats are an abysmal 4-15 against cross-divisional rivals...Despite having the worst record in the Carolina League sitting in fourth place in the Northern Division, the Hillcats still boast the best divisional record against fellow northern teams at 9-6; better than the first place Frederick Keys (8-6), the second place Wilmington Blue Rocks (6-10), and the Potomac Nationals (5-6) who sit in third...

PLEASE BE CAREFUL: Lynchburg seems to be plagued with the injury bug this season, and have made a whopping 30 transactions between injuries, call-ups and free agent signings already...Most recently, Saturday May 7, in Winston-Salem, OF Adam Milligan left the game with a tight hamstring and INF Andrelton Simmons left with a sore back...It was found out after the game was over the INF Matt Weaver had broken his thumb diving for a ball at second base...All three players were unavailable for the Sunday series finale, forcing new catcher Jace Whitmer to play as the designated hitter, and warm-up pitcher's in the bullpen, since there were no healthy position players available on the bench...Tuesday, Milligan and Weaver were placed on the disabled list, Simmons didn't play as he was listed as day-to-day, and in case that wasn't enough, INF Joe Leonard was at home sick Tuesday, and was at the ball park but not in the lineup Wednesday night...Simmons and Leonard have returned to action, but Milligan and Weaver were the sixth and seventh Hillcat players to hit the DL after donning the Green & Gold this season (Thomas Berryhill and Angelo Paulino both were listed on the DL to start the season and have not been with the Hillcats yet in 2011)...

LET'S HIT THE ROAD: Away from the "Hill City" this season the Hillcats have hit .266 as opposed to .231 at home, and pitchers have posted a 3.51 ERA, over a run less than at City Stadium (4.57)...Last night the Hillcats scored five runs on 10 hits in Myrtle Beach, it was the ninth time in the past 10 road games that the 'Cats had tallied nine or more hits...Lynchburg is still just 9-11 on the road but that is much better than their 4-10 mark at City Stadium...

BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Eight members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes RHP Arodys Vizcaino (7), SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...Vizcaino was tabbed the 93rd best prospect in all of baseball by BA as well...

KLEIN'CONNECTS' WITH 'CATS: INF Barrett Kleinknecht was promoted to Lynchburg from Low-A Rome on Tuesday, May 10th, arriving that afternoon to start at shortstop for the Hillcats...He went 0-for-4 in his Hillcats debut...Since however, he is 9-for-20 with a home run and four RBI in five starts with four multi-hit games...Kleinknecht would have had two long balls for the 'Cats had Ryan Strausborger not brought one back in the eighth inning yesterday afternoon in Myrtle Beach...

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: RHP Arodys Vizcaino was dominant Friday night against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans...He completed a season high seven innings, did not allow a run on just two hits, while striking out six batters, which tied a season high he set in the season opener, April 9...The stellar outing earned Vizcaino his second Pitcher of the Week honor of his career (May 17-23, 2010) and first of the season...He earned the win as the Hillcats rolled to an 8-1 victory...It was his first win since the season opener...

TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER : RHP Brett Brach was drafted by the Indians in the 10th round of the 2009 Draft out of Monmouth University...In 2010, ranked fourth among all Midwest League starters in BB/9 (2.03) while pitching for Lake County...Made one start for AA Akron this season...Pitched six shutout innings, giving up just two hits...Currently 3-2 with a 1.63 ERA this season for Kinston...Pitched 5.1 shutout innings against Lynchburg on 4/29, giving up five hits and striking out four...
