Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LAST TIME OUT - On Wednesday night the Pelicans spotted the Potomac Nationals an early six run lead, before putting together an improbable rally to defeat the P-Nats, 9-8. With the Pelicans down 7-1 heading into the bottom of the 3rd inning the "Fightin' Feathers" plated eight unanswered runs to overcome the sizable deficit. The thrilling victory extended the Pelicans winning streak to five games and put them nine games over .500 for the first time all season. 2B J.C. Holt went 3-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored, while CF Ovandy Suero recorded a perfect 3-3 night at the dish to lead the way.

PELICANS WING - Tonight the Pelicans send RHP Moises Hernandez to the hill for his 4th start of the season. Hernandez has appeared in 25 games for Myrtle Beach this year, 22 times out of the bullpen. Hernandez has tossed to a 2-3 record with a team-high 10 saves. In his last start, 8/26, he logged a career-high eight innings at Frederick in a no-decision. He allowed three runs on five hits and struck out seven in the Pelicans 8-3 victory over the Keys in 13 innings. The righty from Valencia, Venezuela has tossed six innings or more in each of his last three outings. Moises was acquired by the Atlanta Braves from the Baltimore Orioles as compensation for pitching coach Leo Mazzone during the recent offseason. Moises began this year in Rome where he went 2-0 and earned two saves in 11 appearances. Last year with the Aberdeen Ironbirds, a member of the Baltimore organization, Moises tossed to an 0-4 record with a 3.08 ERA in seven starts and four relief appearances. In Aberdeen he struck out 56, walked just 24, and opponents hit a mere .217 against him. His younger brother, Felix, is a starting pitcher for the Seattle Mariners and is currently 11-12 with a 4.54 ERA with the M's. Felix leads the Mariners pitching staff in wins with 11 and in strikeouts with 144 this year.

ALL-TIME VS. POTOMAC- The Pelicans have posted an 83-73 all-time record against Potomac. Last year the Nationals won the season series 11-9.

CONGRATS TO CARL & VAN - This morning the historic Carolina League announced the "Year-End" All-Star team which included two Pelicans. OF Carl Loadenthal and 3B Van Pope were selected to the team voted upon each year by the managers, general managers, and media in the league.

SWINGIN' SAMMY - C Clint Sammons brings a healthy five-game hitting streak into tonight's doubleheader. During the streak he is hitting .500 (11-22) with two HR's, 9 RBI's, a double, and four runs scored. He has raised his batting average 16 points, from .240 to .256 over the last five games.

THE VAN IS DRIVING HOME - 3B Van Pope has scored at least one run in 15 of his last 17 games including six straight heading into tonight's game. His recent run-scoring streak has given him the league lead in runs scored this season (77). Pope is within five runs of tying the Pelicans record for most runs scored in a single season, which is currently held by Richard Lewis who stepped on home plate 82 times in 2002. Don't look now, but Pope is also within eight RBI's of tying the Pelicans single season RBI record, entering tonight with 73.

HANGING ON! - OF Carl Loadenthal enters tonight's game as the CL leader in batting average at a .317 clip. Loady is 8 points above the next closest hitter, Salem's Beau Torbert (.309). With just five games remaining Loadenthal hopes to become the 2nd Pelican in the history of the franchise to win the batting crown. Marcus Giles won the batting title in 1999 with a .326 average.

AUGUST'S HOTTEST - 2B J.C. Holt was named as the Pelicans position "Player of the Month" after hitting .342 with 10 RBI's and 10 stolen bases.
