Pelicans Game Notes

Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LHP Chris Masters (8-5, 3.25) at RHP Kennil Gomez (2-4, 3.83)

BITTER PILL: Last night's loss was only the Pelicans' second of the season in a game in which they led after eight innings. On the second night of the season on April 9, Trevor Hurley surrendered a ninth-inning homer to Wilmington's Rey Navarro to tie the game at four in a driving rainstorm. The umpires suspended the game and the Birds and Blue Rocks picked up the action the next day, when Wilmington scored twice in the 11th to win the game. There was one other game that the Pelicans led in the final inning but lost the lead. In a doubleheader opener in Winston-Salem on May 18, Robbie Erlin was two outs away from a complete-game victory, but Ian Gac homered to tie the game before hitting a walk-off shot in extra innings to beat the Birds.

THAT MAKES IT A BAKER'S DOZEN FOR ME: Travis Adair had a bunt single in the first inning last night to start a two-hit night and extend his hitting streak to 13 games. The Woodruff, SC native is batting an even .309 (17-55) with 13 runs scored during the streak, the third-longest by a Pelican this season and it's tied for the seventh-longest in the league. Zach Zaneski had the longest streak in the league, an 18-gamer from June 12-July 22 and Ryan Strausborger's 16-gamer from June 1-16 is tied for the second-longest. Travis kept up his torrid hitting against the Atlanta Braves-affiliated Lynchburg Hillcats. The former Braves prospect was released by Atlanta after the 2009 season and after signing with the Rangers last year, he's gotten some revenge in going 17-for-32 (.531) in eight games. Over the course of two stints with Myrtle Beach this year, Adair has hit .315 while batting in every spot in the lineup except leadoff.

PLAYOFF PUSH: The Carolina League postseason kicks off two weeks from today. The Pelicans will host the first game of the Southern Division Championship Series on Wednesday, September 7 by virtue of their first-half division title. Their opponent is yet to be determined and will be whoever wins the second-half crown or, if the Pelicans come back to win the division again, the club that finishes second to Myrtle Beach. With 13 games to play, the Birds trail the first-place Kinston Indians by four games. The Winston-Salem Dash, who only have 12 games left, trail the K-Tribe by a game and a half.
