Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Woodbridge, VA - The Earth did not quake on Wednesday night, but the scoreboard lit up often enough to pass for a thunderstorm. The familiar refrain of an early lead lost created anguish for the Wilmington Blue Rocks (59-67, 23-34) as the squad saw the Potomac Nationals (61-66, 32-26) serve as their own force of nature, plating 10 unanswered tallies in an 11-3 blowout. The Blue Crew's sixth straight road loss dropped it 8.5 games back of the P-Nats for a playoff spot with a dozen games remaining on the schedule.

Tim Ferguson erupted from a 3-for-31 funk with a two-out, two-run single that gave Wilmington a 2-0 first-inning lead against Evan Bronson (5-4). Sandy Leon's solo homer to straightaway center curbed the advantage to 2-1 in the second before Joey Lewis sent a 3-0 pitch over the fence in left-center field in the fourth to make it 3-1. Alas, Potomac doubled three times in the bottom half of the frame as it tied the game, 3-3.

Spot starter Allen Caldwell allowed just three runs over a career-high-tying five innings of work. He needed just 64 pitches to do so, striking out five and walking none in the process. His successor, Jon Keck (0-2), required 42 pitches to secure just two outs as the P-Nats batted around in a four-run sixth. While Keck allowed all four of the runs, his line could have been worse had Ryan Dennick not entered and stranded two inherited runners.

Dennick surrendered his own four-spot the next inning that made for the 11-3 final margin. Jose Lozada's two-run triple off the foul pole in right field highlighted the barrage.

Bronson departed after seven innings, having retired the last 10 in a row he faced. Marcos Frias and Cameron Selik each hurled a scoreless frame of relief to end the game.

The final series between the two Northern Division rivals concludes on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Wilmington tosses right-hander Tim Melville (9-9, 4.32) in a spot start against fellow righty Adam Olbrychowski (4-7, 4.31). Broadcast coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. as studio host Adam Dobrowolski brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.

PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:

Of Potomac's 15 hits, eight went for extra bases. Wilmington finished with just six total hits.

The P-Nats went 9-for-14 (.643) with runners in scoring position as opposed to the Blue Rocks' 1-for-5 performance.
