SALEM, VA (AUGUST 24, 2011) - Joe Serafin dominated over seven shutout innings and was bolstered by a pair of home runs to lead Winston-Salem past the Red Sox 3-0 on Wednesday night at LewisGale Field. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak against Salem, the second longest in the teams' series history.
Serafin and Red Sox starter Manny Rivera traded zeroes over the first four innings with neither pitcher allowing a man past second base to start the game. Kyle Colligan gave Winston-Salem (31-28, 63-66) the lead when he homered on Rivera's first pitch of the fifth inning. It was Colligan's seventh home run of the season and all have been solo shots.
Rivera (0-2) was lifted after six innings and reliever Anatanear Batista, activated off the disabled list just prior to game time, surrendered a solo home run to Mike Blanke to start the seventh. The blast, Blanke's fifth with the Dash and his seventh overall this season, doubled Winston's lead to 2-0.
The Dash added another run in the seventh when Colligan singled and moved to third base on Batista's pickoff throwing error. Daniel Wagner drove in Colligan with a base hit to center field to extend Winston's lead to three.
That proved to be enough for Serafin (5-10), who scatted five singles over seven innings with no walks and a season-high-tying seven strikeouts. Ryan Kussmaul relieved Serafin in the eighth and set down six of the seven men he faced to pick up his sixth save in as many chances.
The tough-luck loss went to Rivera, who gave up just one run on three hits over six innings.
The win was Winston's first against the Red Sox (26-33, 57-71) since July 2 and it snapped a string of eight straight losses to the Dash's closest geographic rival. The only longer losing streak that Winston-Salem has had against Salem was a ten-game skid against the then-Astros affiliated Salem Avalanche that lasted from August 8, 2006 - May 9, 2007.
Winston-Salem's eight-game road trip reaches its conclusion on Thursday night. RHP Jake Petricka (3-7, 4.25) opposes LHP Chris Hernandez (10-6, 2.52) in a 7:05 p.m. start. The audio broadcast begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for their final home stand of the 2011 regular season on Friday, August 26. Winston-Salem will host Myrtle Beach in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. Fans may purchase tickets for every game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or by visiting www.wsdash.com .
