Double Plays Kill Rallies in Birds Loss

August 24, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Pelicans dropped the middle game of their three-game home set against the Lynchburg Hillcats 3-2 on Wednesday at BB&T Coastal Field. The Birds bounced into double plays to end the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as well as another in the eighth. Lynchburg, holding the league's worst record, has gone 5-4 in Myrtle Beach and aims to sweep tomorrow.

Myrtle Beach had many opportunities, but they were all struck down by 6-4-3 double plays. Zach Zaneski bounced into an inning-ender in the fourth with the tying runs aboard. After the Birds got on the board in the fifth on Ryan Strausborger's RBI double, Jared Prince's bases-loaded double play killed a rally with the tying runs in scoring position. With two on and one out in the sixth, David Paisano ended the inning 6-4-3 for the third straight frame.

Prince got the Pelicans one run closer in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, but with the tying and go-ahead runs on base, Robert Roth struck out Mike Olt to end the threat. Andrew Clark led off the eighth with an infield single against Eliecer Cardenas, but Zaneski grounded into another 6-4-3 double play to quell another rally. Cardenas put the Pelicans down in the ninth to pick up his sixth save.

Lynchburg struck early against starter Kennil Gomez when Keenan Wiley led off the game with a double, moved up on an Andrelton Simmons flyout and scored on Todd Cunningham's groundout. They added one more in the second inning with two out walks by Marcus Lemon and Gerry Rodriguez and a single by L.V. Ware. The Hillcats extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth when Christian Bethancourt singled home Simmons.

Gomez (2-5) allowed three runs on eight hits in his five-inning start, walking four and striking out a season-high six. Zach Osborne was excellent in relief, retiring nine of the ten batters he faced to get through the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Jimmy Reyes worked a perfect ninth for the Birds while recording a strikeout.

Chris Masters (9-5) held the home team to one run in five and one-third innings for the win. With a win tomorrow night the Hillcats earn a three-game sweep and a 10-10 split of the season series.

The series finale is Thursday night as Lynchburg aims for the sweep. Justin Grimm (4-2, 3.84) goes for the Pelicans against Lynchburg's David Hale (3-6, 4.50). Tickets for all Pelicans home games, including the postseason, are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
