Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
RHP David Hale (1-4, 4.06) at RHP Wilfredo Boscan (3-7, 4.48)
LEFT THE BATS AT HOME: In the second inning last night, the Pelicans finally got on the scoreboard to snap a 21-inning scoreless streak. Jared Prince scored on a Santiago Chirino single to spare the Birds the ignominy of being shut out for the third straight game, something that has not happened since MiLB began keeping digital records in 2005. Still, the Keys became just the second team this season to sweep a series from Myrtle Beach, the Wilmington Blue Rocks swept all three of a weekend set in Delaware May 20-22. The culprit in this rough weekend was poor offense, as the Pelicans scored only one run and notched only ten hits the entire series. They batted .114 as a team (10-87) and only had one man reach scoring position during Saturday's and Sunday's game combined.
ROAD TO NOWHERE: Myrtle Beach's struggles on the road are becoming more and more pronounced over the season's second half. Since the All-Star Break, the Pelicans are 5-11 away from BB&T Coastal Field, and as a team, the Pelicans are batting .242 on the road versus a .289 team average at home. The Birds have scored 4.93 runs per game at home and only 4.11 on the road, a drop of nearly 20 percent. The dichotomy is more pronounced in the second half. Through 14 second-half home games, in which the Pelicans have gone 10-4, Myrtle Beach has outscored its opponents 77-49 including 49-27 on last week's eight-game homestand. On the road, the Pelicans have dropped 11 of 16 second-half tilts and have been outscored 70-53 including 45-38 while going 3-7 on their season-long ten-game road trip two weeks ago.
18 AND OVER: Zach Zaneski's 18-game hitting streak was snapped last night as he went 0-for-2 with a hit by pitch. The All-Star Pelicans catcher's run was the longest in the Carolina League this season. He moved past teammate Ryan Strausborger's and Frederick's Miguel Abreu's 16-game streaks on Wednesday. Zaneski's hot streak began when he went 2-for-10 while catching all 23 innings in a June 12 marathon in Kinston. The former Rhode Island Ram batted .309 (25-81) during the streak and is hitting an even .300 on the season.
