Frederick Keys News Release
Despite being out hit on Monday night, the Keys took a lead in the first inning and never looked back. Frederick plated two runs in the first two innings of the contest and added two more in fifth as they took the series opener, 4-2, over the Salem Red Sox. SS Manny Machado finished the night 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. LHP Jake Pettit notched the win and improved to 3-0 in three starts with the Keys.
Facing Drake Britton for the fifth time in 2011, Frederick notched a run off the lefty in the first two innings of the contest. 2B Jonathan Schoop singled in the bottom of the first against Britton. After a wild pitch moved advanced Schoop to second, Manny Machado brought him home on his first of two doubles on the night.
Leading 1-0 entering the bottom of the second inning, C Brian Ward connected with a Britton pitch and drove over the left field fence for his fifth home run of the season.
Following the Ward homer, Britton retired the final eight batters he faced on the night. Over four innings, he surrendered two runs on three hits while striking out five and walking none.
Salem plated an unearned run in the fifth inning against Jake Pettit but the Keys responded with two runs against Red Sox reliever, Tom Ebert. With a run already home in the bottom of the fifth, Machado hit a single to left field that scored LF Kipp Schutz for the Keys' fourth and final run of the night.
In the top of the eighth, the Red Sox loaded the bases with one down. Keys' manager Orlando Gomez called on LHP Will Startup to enter the game for RHP Clay Schrader. Peter Hissey hit a sac fly to left field for the second out of the inning and Startup struck out LF Vladimir Frias to end the frame.
Hissey's sac fly in the eighth ended the Keys streak of 38 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.
Sean Gleason came in for the ninth inning and closed out the game for his 28th save of the year.
In his third start with the Keys, Jake Pettit allowed one unearned run on six hits over 5 2/3 innings of work. The 2010 42nd round pick improved to 3-0 with Frederick.
Drake Britton picked up the loss on the night and fell to 1-10 on the season.
The Keys and Red Sox will play game two of the four-game series on Tuesday night. LHP Nathan Moreau (10-7, 4.06) will get the nod for Frederick while Salem will turn to RHP Anthony Ranaudo (2-4, 4.38). First pitch from Harry Grove Stadium is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
