Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC. - The offensive woes that plagued the Pelicans in Frederick this weekend have followed them back to Myrtle Beach. Wilfredo Boscan pitched well, but the bats could not back him up, scoring one run on only three hits as the Birds dropped the opener of their four-game set against the Lynchburg Hillcats 4-1 at BB&T Coastal Field on Monday.

The loss is the Pelicans' fourth in a row and in the four contests the offense has been the culprit. Over 36 innings at bat Myrtle Beach has gone 13-for-116, a meager .112 batting average, while crossing home plate only twice.

The Pelicans took an early lead in the second inning when Santiago Chirino singled, moved to third on a Jared Hoying double and scored on a Vinny DiFazio groundout. There would be only one more hit the rest of the night for the Birds, a sixth-inning single by Travis Adair.

Lynchburg answered back in the fourth with a pair of runs off Boscan to take the lead. Phil Gosselin beat out an infield single and scored the tying run when Joey Terdoslavich ripped a double into the gap in left center. Joe Leonard singled to put runners at the corners and with one out, Christian Bethancourt bounced one back to the mound that could have been an inning-ending double play, but there was no relay to first as Terdoslavich scored the go-ahead run.

David Hale (2-4) shut down the home team to pick up the win, holding the Pelicans to one run on three hits in six frames. Mark Lamm pitched a perfect seventh and Dimasther Delgado worked a 1-2-3 eighth before Ryan Buchter put up another zero in the ninth to record his tenth save.

Boscan (3-7) pitched well enough to win, allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. The righty struck out six without walking a batter, but he was outdueled by Hale.

The Hillcats posted an insurance run in both the seventh and ninth innings. An infield hit and two bloop singles, the last one off the bat of former Pelican L.V. Ware, added up to a Lynchburg tally in the seventh. With two outs in the ninth, reliever Kennil Gomez hit Gerry Rodriguez and Keenan Wiley's triple made it a 4-1 game.

Lynchburg entered Monday with the worst record in the Carolina League by four and a half games behind the Salem Red Sox, but they've had success against the Pelicans, splitting the first 14 games of the season series.

The series continues on Tuesday night as Justin Grimm (2-2, 3.88) goes for the Birds against former Pelican Zeke Spruill (7-8, 3.06) of Lynchburg. First pitch at BB&T Coastal Field is set for 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all Pelicans home games, including the postseason, are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, and by phone at 843-918-6000 or 877-918-TIXX.
