Pelicans Game Notes

Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

- LHP Robbie Ross (8-2, 2.49) at LHP Joe Serafin (1-6, 5.50) -

STREAK SNAPPERS: Myrtle Beach ended its season-long losing streak with Tuesday night's victory over the Lynchburg Hillcats. With three losses in their first three games in Lynchburg, the Pelicans dropped five straight for the first time this season. Prior to that slide, the Pelicans had only endured three losing streaks of three games or more this season with their longest coming in the form of a four-game skid from May 20 to 24. The Pelicans converted in high-leverage situations Tuesday night, going 6-for-15 with runners in scoring position (versus 4-for-28 in the series leading up to that point) and only leaving six men on-base.

RARE RALLIES: The Pelicans' series-concluding win over Lynchburg was a rare one in one statistical category. Myrtle Beach picked up the victory when their opponent scored first for just the third time in 18 tries on the road all season. The Pelicans are now 11-23 in such contests this year. One area where the Pelicans have excelled, however, is holding onto late leads. Though Lynchburg cut its deficit to 4-3 after the sixth inning, the Pelicans put two runs across in the seventh and improved their record to 37-2 in games in which they lead after seven.

ADAIR UP'AIR: The return of Travis Adair couldn't mean more to an opposing team than it would to Winston-Salem. In three matchups with the Dash this year, Adair made his name known. The Woodruff, South Carolina resident singled home Vinny DiFazio with the game-winning run in a 2-1 Pelicans win over the Dash on April 18 and threw out Andy Wilkins at the plate for that evening's final out in a dramatic home plate collision with DiFazio. Adair wasn't done in that series as he drove home the eventual game-winner one night later on a bunt single to score Jared Prince in a 7-4 Myrtle Beach victory, and singled home pinch runner Andres James with a walk-off knock in the bottom of the 12th on April 20.

LEAPIN' LEURY: Pelicans shortstop Leury Garcia has been named the Carolina League's Topps Player of the Month for June as announced by the league on July 5. Myrtle Beach's middle infielder and leadoff man batted .342 for the month, the second-highest average in the circuit, with 38 hits, the third-highest total in all of Class A baseball. Garcia's offensive resurgence has been sparked by a return to the top spot in the batting order where he has hit regularly now since June 8. The fleet-footed switch-hitter from Santiago, Dominican Republic entered play on June 1 with a .229 batting average, a .266 on-base percentage, and a .552 OPS. Garcia exited June as a .273 hitter with a .318 OBP and .671 OPS. The 20-year-old got back to using his legs to make things happen in June, as well. Garcia bested his walks total from April and May (seven combined) by walking ten times in June, and he also matched his stolen bases total from the season's first two months by swiping ten bags in June. Leury led the CL in runs (22), hits, total bases (51), and stolen bases in the month. Garcia celebrated the award by going 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and a run batted in on the day he won the award.
